The American Dream Discussion 1 (Yellow) In your groups, discuss what you know about the American Dream. Make sure to talk about: What do you think is meant by “the American Dream”? Do you think the American Dream actually exists? Does it exist for some people, but not everyone? What has influenced your opinion on the American Dream? Make sure to have a concise statement ready to share with the class.

The American Dream Discussion 2 (Orange) In your groups, discuss how we come to understand complex concepts. Make sure to talk about: How should words be defined? Who should be responsible for defining words? What are some ideas that you understand, but have trouble explaining? Make sure to have a concise statement ready to share with the class.

Definition Practice: Patriotism

The assignment You will write a 1-2 page essay that defines your interpretation of what it means to be an American You will use the multiple perspectives from texts we read in class and the strategies of exemplification, function, classification, and negation to hone your definition. You should also have the basic elements of a well organized essay A clear thesis An engaging introduction and conclusion Logical transitions between ideas Well selected quotes from texts.
