Defining the American Dream An exercise in futility

The American Dream Unit In the first half of this unit, we will cover the following areas: How to create an extended definition of a complex concept How to define concepts through example, function, classification, and negation How to use primary sources for research The importance of tone and diction in writing The importance and use of imagery FOR THIS UNIT, YOU WILL NEED PAGES 1-101. ​ YOU CAN TEAR THESE PAGES OUT AND PUT THEM IN YOUR BINDER. 

The American Dream Discussion 1 (Yellow) In your groups, discuss what you know about the American Dream. Make sure to talk about: What do you think is meant by “the American Dream”? Do you think the American Dream actually exists? Does it exist for some people, but not everyone? What has influenced your opinion on the American Dream? Make sure to have a concise statement ready to share with the class.
