Example Paragraph: Skittles vs. Starbursts Are skittles better than Starbursts? Pull out a sheet of practice paper (split in half with a partner). Write your name at the top, and write “Example Paragraph” on the top line. On a practice piece of paper, tell me your opinion: are Skittles better than Starburst? Yes or No? And give me brief reasons why.

Starburst or skittles vote Now… Let’s turn your OPINION into a CLAIM. My opinion: I think Skittles are better than Starbursts because I think they have better flavors, more variety, there are more of them, and they have cooler colors. My Claim: The flavor, quantity and coloring of Skittles surpasses that of Starbursts. What is different between my opinion and my CLAIM?

claim: The flavor, quantity and coloring of Skittles surpasses that of Starbursts. A CLAIM directly answers the major question, and doesn’t stray off topic A CLAIM is a road map for the rest of the paper or discussion. From a thesis, others can know exactly what you are going to talk about. A CLAIM does not say “I believe” or “I would like to write about…” A CLAIM has specific reasons or points listed

What is progress worth? Make an opinion- what do you think? Pull out a piece of paper Make an opinion- what do you think? Write this on the BACK of your Practice paper.

Now make it a claim: OPINION (What do you believe and why?): Turn it into a CLAIM! CLAIM: Progress is both beneficial and detrimental to society. In the case of scientific knowledge and industry progress benefits society. In the case of Weaponization and war progress can cost many lives and can increase tensions. Using your Essay outline sheet, write your Thesis.

How to write an analytical paragraph P.E.E. How to write an analytical paragraph

Point Evidence Explanation Analytical Paragraph Write an analytical paragraph in 3 easy steps. Just remember to P.E.E.! P.E.E. stands for: Point Evidence Explanation

Step 1- Point (or sometimes called a topic Sentence) What is the topic or point of the paragraph? The first sentence must make it clear what the paragraph will be about. (add CLAIM)

Starburst vs. Skittles Thesis: The flavor, quantity and coloring of Skittles surpasses that of Starbursts. First Paragraph: Point/Topic Sentence: Skittles have a wide variety of flavors that make their taste more accessible to the public. What is my point? What is my paragraph going to be about? How does this topic sentence connect to my CLAIM?

Now try it with progression. CLAIM: Progress is both beneficial and detrimental to society. In the case of scientific knowledge and industry progress benefits society. In the case of Weaponization and war progress can cost many lives and can increase tensions. What is one of my “points” in my claim for why progress has a cost ? First Paragraph: Point/Topic Sentence: The establishment of industry and technological advancement allowed mass wepaonization through assembly lines and new scientific and industrial knowledge. -How? Evidence? Now on your White paper, write a topic sentence for Paragraph 1, 2 and 3. What are these three paragraphs going to be about? Set up their topics.

Step 2- Evidence What words or phrases or events prove your point? The next sentence(s) of your paragraph should give evidence from the text or resources. It must relate directly to your point! For example: Thesis: The flavor, quantity and coloring of Skittles surpasses that of Starbursts. First Paragraph: Point/Topic Sentence: Skittles have a wide variety of flavors that make their taste more accessible to the public. Evidence: According to USA Weekly “Skittles have won 30+ awards for their flavoring combinations since they have been in production.” This evidence supports my point!

Step 2- Evidence CLAIM: Progress is both beneficial and detrimental to society. In the case of scientific knowledge and industry progress benefits society. In the case of Weaponization and war progress can cost many lives and can increase tensions. First Paragraph: Point/Topic Sentence: The establishment of industry and technological advancement allowed mass wepaonization through assembly lines and new scientific and industrial knowledge Evidence: USE YOUR RESOURCES!!!! (Notes/ Book etc) - New weapons used during WWII

Step 2- Evidence Evidence: After you select a resource, you can place it in your outline : Example: All of the new weapons created during WWI relates to the number of deaths and change in warfare – leading to a cost of lives. Weapons such as the Gatling (machine gun), chemical warfare and bombs were far more deadly than any weapon the world had seen. This lead to over 10 million deaths in WWI.

Step 2- Evidence Evidence: Now, place your evidence in the Evidence section of your outline for each paragraph. Also, don’t forget to introduce your evidence!!!! GOOD: An example of Mass Weaponization is – putting guns on airplanes and all of the weapons which lead to trench warfare. It is because of the trenches that so many men lost lives. Bad: Putting guns on airplanes and new weapons lead to trench warfare.

Step 3- Explanation Explain how the evidence illustrates or proves your point. Explain your EVIDENCE- tell me why it matters! For example: Thesis: The flavor, quantity and coloring of Skittles surpasses that of Starbursts. First Paragraph: Point/Topic Sentence: Skittles have a wide variety of flavors that make their taste more accessible to the public. Evidence: According to USA Weekly “Skittles have won 30+ awards for their flavoring combinations since they have been in production.” Explanation: From this evidence, it is clear that Skittles have a large variety of flavor packed into each tiny treat. The Skittles corporation has been recognized for this flavor achievement throughout the decades. This recognition does not come easily to just any candy company in the “sweets” market. Skittles represents a flavor achievement unparalleled by any other fruity candy. Clearly, Skittles are much more flavorful and therefore tastier than Starbursts, or others.

Step 3- Explanation Explain how the evidence illustrates or proves your point. Explain your EVIDENCE- tell me why it matters! For example: CLAIM: Progress is both beneficial and detrimental to society. In the case of scientific knowledge and industry progress benefits society. In the case of Weaponization and war progress can cost many lives and can increase tensions First Paragraph: The establishment of industry and technological advancement allowed mass weaponization through assembly lines and new scientific and industrial knowledge Evidenence An example of Mass Weaponization is – putting guns on airplanes and all of the weapons which lead to trench warfare. It is because of the trenches that so many men lost lives. NOW… EXPLAIN! WHY IS THIS EVIDENCE IMPORTANT? WHAT DOES IT PROVE?

Step 3- Explanation CLAIM: Progress is both beneficial and detrimental to society. Explanation: Without progress we still would be using basic riffles and participating in “gentleman” warfare. The industrial revolution brought competition between different countries leading to competition between scientific and industrial advancements by each country. Tensions increased through weaponization and when War broke out these progress weapons lead to the death of over 10 million people. Weaponization lead to trench warfare which increased illnesses and disease.
