What is a metaphor? The comparison of two unlike things.

When do you need to use an apostrophe? When you have words that are either possessives or contractions.

What are context clues? Words that surround a word to help you figure out it’s meaning.

What are homonyms? Words that sound the same but have different meanings

What do you call two words that are combined together to form one word? Compound words

What is Personification? Giving human characteristics to animals or objects.

What is a noun? A person, place or a thing

What is a verb An action word

What is an adjective A word that describes someone or something

What is an adverb? A word that modifies a verb and answers questions like how, what, when, where, etc.

What is a pronoun? Words that take the place of a noun

What is an idiom? An idiom is a figure of speech

What is repetition and why do authors sometimes use it? The repeating of words or phrases to emphasize a point.

What are the three points of a Literacy Triangle? Purpose, audience and genre

What is allusion? A figure of speech that makes reference to popular people, places or stories. Example: He came into the room huffing and puffing like the big, bad wolf.

What is the adverb in the following sentence? Harley quickly opened the door to see who was knocking. The adverb is quickly.

What is hyperbole? An exaggeration used to make a point.

Give one example of a hyperbole It was so hot out you could fry an egg on the sidewalk!

“Jumbo Shrimp” is an example of a what? Oxymoron

What is irony? A meaning exactly opposite of its literal meaning. Opposite usually happens rather than what is expected.

What does it mean to make an inference? Conclusions you can draw based on evidence from a story.

Provide one example of irony

What is onomatopoeia? Words that describe sounds such as Bang, Pow, Whap, and splat!

List three words that are adverbs.

What do preposition do? A word that indicates location

What is a biography? A book written about somebody.

What is an autobiography A book about someone also written by that person.

What is the definition of conflict? The problem or struggle the main character faces in a story

What are the five types of conflicts we learned about this year? Person v.s. person, self, fate, society, and nature

Is non-fiction a true story or a made up one?

What is theme? The broad idea, message or moral of a story

What are the main parts of a friendly letter? Greeting/salutation Body Closing Signature

What is the setting of a story? When and where the story takes place.

What is a synonym? Words that have the same, or nearly the same meaning as other words.

What is an antonym? Words that are opposite in meaning to each other

What is a fable? A fictional story that usually uses animals as characters and teaches a lesson or moral
