Key Vocabulary Words Territory: a place owned and governed by a country. Gold rush: a huge movement of people bring to find gold. Forty-niners: A person who went to California seeking gold in the gold rush 1849. Cape: A point of land that reaches out into the ocean. Clipper ships: The fastest ship in the time.

Key Vocabulary (Continued) Isthmus: a narrow piece of land that connects two larger land areas. Swamp: a low wet area usually covered by shallow water. Claim: An area a miner said belonged to him or her. Industry: All the businesses that make one kind product or provide one kind of service.

Hydraulic Mining was made illegal because it wastes water and it can be dangerous because of the high powered flow. People made less than $10.00 a day!!!!!! John Sutter made an oath with James Marshall that they would keep it secret forever, but word got out within 6 weeks. Alaska also had a GOLD RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!
