The particle could be used to improve the energy efficiency of electronic inks used in e-readers. A team at Delaware State University is developing new devices to proactively monitor patient health status. The project depends upon use of machine perception and sensory motor learning to recognize a person’s degrading health in a home care environment. NSF-funded researchers at the University of Delaware are working to develop new methods for detecting the production of compounds by plants that are toxic to other plants. Courtesy: www.research.gov/seeinnovation INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN DELAWARE Delaware has about 3,012 high technology businesses that employ 23,826 people. 1 NSF-funded research contributed to the generation of 300 patent awards in Delaware between 2000 and 2009.2 5.4 percent of Delaware residents work in science and engineering occupations.1 University of Delaware research expenditures exceeded $202 million in FY 2013. Delaware Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Delaware received $2 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN DELAWARE Delaware Technical and Community College is incorporating renewable energy topics into existing technology programs in order to train students to enter the workforce for new green industries. The NSF-supported program also provides outreach activities to local middle schools and high schools. Delaware State University hosts a Research Experience for Undergraduates program that provides students the opportunity to gain hands on experience in molecular genetics and genomics. The program provides individual mentoring and exposure to internship and employment opportunities in government, academia, and industry. A researcher at the University of Delaware created self-contained, miniature ecosystems called “Winogradsky columns,” where the interactions among microbial communities can be seen.
