Agenda: “Letter from Birmingham” Dictado 4 Quiz Watch Act I Act I Processing Read Act II Homework: Complete Act I processing if we don’t finish in class.

“Letter FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL” Objective: I will analyze and evaluate the argument in Dr. King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Select the Collections Login tab under Unit 3, logging in with the credentials you use to sign onto any computer in the building. Go to page 319. Select Resources on the right side toolbar. Select “Level Up Tutorial: Analyzing Arguments.” If you have ear buds, you may use them. Go through all 8 slides of the tutorial, jotting down the definitions of the words in bold, as well as any examples. When you are done taking notes on all 8 slides, complete the practice activity slides. Please record your score out of 4 in your notebook.

“Letter FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL” Objective: I will analyze and evaluate the argument in Dr. King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” As a class, we are going to listen the opening of Dr. King’s letter (pages 319-320), answering these questions as we go: What is Dr. King’s claim in his letter? Who is his audience? What is the premise on which he basis his claim? What evidence does he employ to make his case? Which of this evidence is logical? Which of this evidence is emotional? Why are both logic and emotion needed? Identify an allusion. Identify at least one counterargument that Dr. King brings forth. How does he argue against it?

Dictado Quiz 4 Objective: So that I demonstrate proper grammar/mechanics in my own writing, I will write and punctuate a sentence that I hear, discussing the choices that I make with the class. I will finally correct the grammar according to the rules of Standard English. The single window which has been provided for these “two” rooms is located in this kitchen area. The sole natural light the family may enjoy in the course of a day is only that which fights its way through this little window (Hansberry 24). Rule—quotes to show a point of disagreement Sole—single (can also mean the sole of a shoe) Course—the direction followed Which—pronoun to refer to the previous light Its--possessive

Act I Objective: So that I may write my own scene, I will analyze a playwright’s development of characters, conflict, symbol, and theme. My Side Mrs. Martenson’s Side 1. Write a love letter from a young Walter Younger, Sr. to a young Lena Younger. The time period of the letter would have to be in the 1910s when Mama and her husband were just starting out their lives together. What are their lives like? What hopes do they have? What fears? Please glue your Cornell Notes on the right side of ______________. 2. Using the stage directions at the beginning of Act 1, draw a picture of the Younger family living room/kitchen area. Make certain that you follow Hansberry’s descriptions closely. Use the set design sheet that is linked on the website. Answer the questions as we read the play aloud in class.

Act II Objective: So that I may write my own scene, I will analyze a playwright’s development of characters, conflict, symbol, and theme. My Side Mrs. Martenson’s Side 1. The Younger family just wants to be happy, but each member of the family is looking for that happiness to come in a different form. Write a recipe for the Younger family’s happiness. Be sure to use standard recipe terms (different quantities of quarts, ounces, cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, pinches, etc.) in relation to their individual dreams. Please glue your Cornell Notes on the right side of ______________. 2. The audience doesn’t get to see the house in Clybourne Park. Using Mama’s description of it in Act II, draw its floor plan. Then, write a few sentences that explain how that house is more to the family than just a place to live. Answer the questions as we read the play aloud in class.
