Fire Ants Fire ants are red-colored insects that sting and deliver a harmful substance, called venom, into your skin. Fire ant venom contains a chemical called piperidine. One of the most common problems for Americans in Vietnam. Katherine

Jungle Rot Tropical Ulcer Skin and Nail Infection Discolored and thick or flaky nails Lasting impact on Veterans Prevented by; Checking for fungal cultures Treated with pills (LAMISIL & SPORANOX) after switching socks Katherine

Snakes There are many types of snakes in Vietnam. Soldiers would say “there are 100 types of snakes in vietnam, 99 are poisonous and the last one will crush you to death.” The most common snakes were cobras, malayan pit viper, bamboo viper, and the kraits. The kraits and the green tree viper were nicknamed the two step charlie because you could take two steps and then you were dead. J.B.

S.F. Malaria/Mosquitoes high fever, anemia, and severe flu like symptoms (vomiting, shivering, joint pain, and headache) parasite Mosquitoes transmit the disease Few Americans die from it 40,000 military personnel diagnosed from 1970-1975 Malaria took more people out of combat than bullets

CP Pills (Monday pills, Dailys) S.F. Orange Anti-malaria pills taken once per week Dailies were anti-malaria pills taken daily Linked to behavioral problems, personality disorders, and inability to control emotions or actions Large pills They tasted badly and the soldiers didn’t like to take them Some decided not to take the pills so that they could get malaria and get discharged

Leeches Leeches would attach themselves to exposed areas when soldiers would walk through swamps. Common ways that soldiers would get rid of leeches would be with lit cigarettes or a very powerful bug repellant. E.C.

Dysentery -illness which causes inflammation of the intestines and bloody diarrhea -dehydration as a result -caused by bacterial infections, viral infections or parasitic infestations E.C.

Dehydration -dehydration prevention is one of the most effective methods to stop heat illness in the military. -Soldiers carry around more than 80 pounds in over 100 degree weather and can’t stop to cool down and recover. -Performance declines when dehydration kicks in. -Dehydration can cause muscle spasms, confusion and heat stroke.
