Focus on God’s Purposes August 8

Think About It … What are some different routes you can take to get from your home to drive to church? What are some things that can get in the way of your trip to church? Today We look at what got in the way of David’s doing God’s will David had his own plans but found it was not the direction God wanted him to take

Listen for what God told Nathan to say to David. 2 Samuel 7:1-7 (NIV) After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, [2] he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent." [3] Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you." [4] That night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:

Listen for what God told Nathan to say to David. [5] "Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the Lord says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? [6] I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. [7] Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" '

Good Intentions What contrast bothered David after he was well established in Jerusalem? What was Nathan’s initial reaction to David’s instinct to build a house for the ark of God? If you were one of David’s advisors, what good reasons could you have provided in support of him building a temple?

Good Intentions Initially, why or how did David’s concern for the house of God not sound pious or presumptuous? According to the word Nathan received from the Lord, how did God feel about the fact that no permanent house of worship had been built?

Good Intentions How, then, does one go about determining whether or not a decision is God’s will? What could be the negative consequences of attempting to serve God in a way that goes against His plan?

God’s Intentions If you could guarantee something for your children/grandchildren, what would it be? Listen for guarantees God gives David.

Listen for guarantees God gives David. 2 Samuel 7:11-16 (NIV" 'The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: [12] When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. [13] He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Listen for guarantees God gives David. [14] I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. [15] But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. [16] Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.' "

God’s Intentions What was God’s covenant with the house of David? What relationship did God promise to have with David’s son and his descendants? David wanted one thing (a good thing) but God showed that He had something much better in store for him. What circumstances might be like that for us?

God’s Intentions How do we recognize when we are about to settle for less than God’s best for us? What was God’s intention in making David powerful and prosperous? What is the most reassuring aspect of God’s covenant with the house of David?

Listen for how David responds to God’s promises in the preceding verses. 2 Samuel 7:18-21 (NIV) Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: "Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? [19] And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant.

Listen for how David responds to God’s promises in the preceding verses. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign Lord? [20] "What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign Lord. [21] For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

Humble Submission Why was David in shock? How did David demonstrate that he understood the uniqueness of God’s covenant with him? Besides shock, what other emotions do you see expressed by David in this prayer?

Humble Submission David expresses his submission to God. In what ways do we show submission to God’s direction in our lives? What kinds of dreams do we have for serving God? What can you do this week to determine if any of those things are God’s will?

Application God has an overall purpose and plan. He also has an individual purpose for each believer This week, stay in contact with God to discover His purposes for you Read God’s Word daily, talk to Him in prayer Ask Him for guidance and direction

Application Remember that God’s plans and goals are both long term and short term Meditate on God’s workings in the generations before and after you Remember that this includes ultimate purpose revealed in Jesus Christ

Application Follow David’s example of humble prayer Thank God for keeping His promises Express your confidence in His sufficiency and authority
