Research & Military attempts AR Early Days Research & Military attempts THE ‘SWORD OF DAMOCLES’ A university of Utah R&D project. Displayed primitive computer graphics over the real world but was too heavy to wear without support. VIRTUAL FIXTURES A 1992 R&D project by the US Air Force, designed to overlay virtual tools to engineers and pilots. A B

Current Hardware/Projects Where is Augmented Reality now? PROJECT TANGO A google project focusing on using real time 3D tracking cameras in portable devices such as tablets and phones. Can accurately detect the map the environment around you. ARCore The successor to Tango. A software only solution that achieves the same goal. Cheaper to roll out to existing and current mobile handsets. HOLOLENS Microsoft’s planned head mounted AR display. Similar features to Googles offering but images directly in your field of vision. A dev model is currently £4,529. CAST AR Active 3D glasses capable of projecting images onto an interactive playing mat in front of you, interaction based on a provided wand remote control.

Hologrid – Monster Battle Games in Development What traditional style games are currently being worked on? Hologrid – Monster Battle A tactical grid based battle game created by Phil Tippet and inspired by his own Star Wars chess scene in the 1977 movie. Currently works on mobile and plans for Hololens. Yu-Gi-Oh AR Hololens A fan creation based on the Konami CCG franchise. This works on the developer kits of the Hololens and monsters battle in front of you as cards are played. The Machines A tabletop wargame in a similar vain to Games Workshops Warhammer series. Players look around battlefield and command units in AR with an Apple phone thanks to their own ARKit. CAST AR – D&D Before CastAR went under they had demonstrated a working software system for playing and managing D&D games locally and across the internet with pieces moving as players gave their turn actions.

How does the Future look? Will we see a new trend in social tabletop gaming? AR tabletop titles preferring to use mobile technology currently have seen the most commercial success. 01 A lot of the higher end hardware is still in its research and development cycle or struggling to find funding. 02 Independent companies turning to crowdfunding for financial backing are limited in scope for what they can create. 03 The interest for these kind of games exists, the hardware simply needs to progress first. Even Wizards of the Coast have expressed an interest in AR MtG and Dungeons & Dragons. 04
