Product Design Why study Product Design? A creative subject: designing, sketching, making Learn by doing: modelling, testing, analysing Learn new skills: marker rendering, CAD/CAM, machine tools Transferable skills: organising, planning, evaluating Access to a wide range of degree courses: Product design will allow you to access courses in design, engineering, business, marketing to name but a few.

Edexcel Product Design : 9DT0 2 Year Linear Course Examination taken at the end of Year 13 Major project submitted at the end of Year 13. This course is still waiting to be approved by QCA. 15% Science and Mathematics content. Component 1: Principles of Design and Technology 50% of the qualification 2.5 hour examination 120 marks Component 2: Independent design and make project Non-examined assessment A portfolio and working prototype to be submitted.

Year 12 Collapsible Seating Students will be set a design brief by their teacher and complete a design and make project as a pre-cursor to their major project in Year 13. The design and make project will be assessed internally by SHS staff using the Edexcel criteria. This will give staff and students a good representation as to their likely achievement at A Level. Students will also undertake a range of small focussed practical tasks to ensure that they have the breadth of practical skills required for Year 13. Collapsible Seating Topics Covered in Year 12 Materials and properties of materials – woods, metals, plastics, composites, boards, papers. Major processes – CADCAM, lathes, milling machines, formers, printing processes, fabrication processes Scales of production Drawing and graphics techniques Nets and developments Ergonomics and anthropometrics

Year 13 Independent Design and Make Project Year 13 will be focussed around your project. This will start in the summer term of Year 12 and be finished in May of Year 13. You will spend approximately 50% of your contact time on this project as well as independent work. Product Design Science and Mathematics 15% of the examination assessment will be awarded for mathematical questions with a DT focus. Don’t Panic!! The questions asked will be equivalent to higher tier GCSE questions – Not A Level Mathematics.

Product Design One last thing……. If you are considering taking A Level Product Design & Mathematics, you can apply for an Arkwright Scholarship. Applicants must be actively considering a university degree or higher-level apprenticeship in Engineering or Technical Design and a career in the same subjects. Applications are between October and January, before the year of entry. A design centred examination – February Interview If successful, you will receive; £600 over the 2 years Reimbursement of one "Headstart" university experience course for first-year Scholars Support from your Sponsor may include: a day visit work experience personal mentor support for your curriculum project
