Program Completion and Staying Quit Session Six

Discussion Who has not used tobacco since Quit Plan/Change Plan Night? 2 weeks? Today? What helped? What good things have you noticed? How have you rewarded yourself?

What we will talk about in this session… How I’m creating my tobacco-free lifestyle Problem solve and reinforce my intent to stay tobacco free Share my thoughts and feelings about completing the program and my plan to stay tobacco free Volunteering to support someone else who has decided to quit or cut down It’s the same!! 

Videos - optional Barb Tarbox: A life cut short by tobacco The Tobacco Conspiracy Dr. Mike Evans - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z16vhtjWKL0&feature=player_embedded Single best thing you can do to Quit Smoking One piece of Session Six is about emphasizing what reasons each participant, and the group, have identified as their personal reasons for making the change they identified as their goal. If health was a key reason than the Barb Tarbox video can resonate for the participants – DVD version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqQy6qeBpAE The Tobacco Conspiracy documentary is a France/Canada production which covers Tobacco Industry tactics – DVD available through the Tobacco Reduction Program or it can be ordered through either Chapters.Indigo or Amazon if you have participants (such as young adults) who will be influenced by how the industry targets and manipulates people you can make use of sections of the video and loan it out to people If you have a selection of reasons identified by participants an option is to play Dr. Mike Evans – Single best Thing You Can do to Quit Smoking which will summarize all of the topics covered over the last five sessions

Quitting Support Technique #19 Relapse prevention Some potential causes of relapse are: Negative emotional states; Interpersonal conflicts; Social pressure; Urges/temptations; Positive situations and feelings; Testing personal control.

Quitting Support Technique #19 Relapse prevention If you do experience a relapse, you may feel frustrated, angry or discouraged. These feelings are normal. Try not to lose sight of the end goal: a tobacco-free future. Get back on track with your plan as soon as possible. Problem solve ways to avoid whatever triggered the slip in future.

Quitting Support Technique #19 Relapse prevention Tips for maintaining a tobacco-free lifestyle: Remove visible triggers (e.g., tobacco, lighters and ashtrays); Avoid places or activities where you will want to use tobacco; Practice QST#6: The Four Ds; Keep your stress in check; Review your Quit Plan often; Ask for continued support from those around you; Don’t forget to keep rewarding yourself!

Feedback on your experiences What quit strategies helped you the most? What other things helped? What would you change about the program?

Discussion Looking ahead to your tobacco-free future what challenges will you face, and how will you overcome them?

CONGRATULATIONS Provide each individual their QuitCore graduation certificate – print from the QuitCore facilitator online files in the administration folder On all that you have accomplished, the goals you have made and achieved, and the continuation of this journey
