ALCOHOL WHAT IS ALCOHOL? Alcohol (ethanol or ethyl alcohol) is the ingredient found in beer, wine and spirits that causes drunkenness. Alcohol is formed when yeast ferments (breaks down without oxygen) the sugars in different food. For example, wine is made from the sugar in grapes, beer from the sugar in malted barley (a type of grain), cider from the sugar in apples, vodka from the sugar in potatoes, beets or other plants.

TYPES OF ALCOHOL The variety of alcohol types, different brands, and mixing ingredients is sometimes overwhelming. SYRUP Magazine makes it easy for you to gain a clear understanding of each type of alcohol and mixing ingredients by breaking them down to their basic classes: Spirits, Liqueurs, Wines & Champagnes, Beers, and Mixers.

TYPES OF ALCOHOL BEER ALE LAGER - a type of beer of German origin that contains a relatively small amount of hops and is aged from six weeks to six months to allow sedimentation. CIDER

TYPES OF ALCOHOL CHAMPAGNE - a sparkling white wine made from a blend of grapes, especially Chardonnay and pinot, produced in Champagne. SPARKLING WINE - any of various effervescent wines, such as champagne, produced by a process involving fermentation in the bottle. VERMOUTH - a sweet or dry fortified wine flavored with aromatic herbs and used chiefly in mixed drinks.

TYPES OF ALCOHOL LIQUEURS (FLAVORED SPIRITS) Liqueurs are flavored spirits prepared by infusing certain woods, fruits, or flowers, in either water or alcohol, and adding sugar, etc. Others are distilled from aromatic or flavoring agents. WINES & CHAMPAGNE RED WINE - wine having a red color derived from skins of dark-colored grapes. WHITE WINE - any wine of a clear, transparent color, bordering on white, as Madeira, sherry, Lisbon, etc.; -- distinguished from wines of a deep red color, as port and Burgundy. ROSE WINE - pinkish table wine from red grapes whose skins were removed after fermentation began.

TYPES OF ALCOHOL SPIRITS GIN - a colorless alcoholic beverage made by distilling or redistilling rye or other grain spirits and adding juniper berries or aromatics such as anise, caraway seeds, or angelica root as flavoring. VODKA - originally distilled from fermented wheat mash but now also made from a mash of rye, corn, or potatoes. RUM - distilled from cane juice, or from the scamming of the boiled juice, or from treacle or molasses, or from the lees of former distillations. Also, sometimes used colloquially as a generic or a collective name for intoxicating

TYPES OF ALCOHOL WHISKEY - distilled from grain, potatoes, etc., especially in Scotland, Ireland, and the United States. In the United States, whisky is generally distilled from maize, rye, or wheat, but in Scotland and Ireland it is often made from malted barley. TEQUILA - an alcoholic liquor distilled from the fermented juice of the Central American century plant Agave tequila. BRANDY - an alcoholic liquor distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice

ALCOHOLIC CHART

WHY IS ALCOHOL SO POPULAR? DRINKING TOO MUCH, WHETHER BINGE DRINKING OR CHRONIC, CAN TAKE A SERIOUS TOLL ON YOUR HEALTH. ALCOHOL IS ESSENTIALLY A POISON SO TAKING IT REPEATEDLY AFFECTS EVERY MAJOR ORGAN IN THE BODY. IT INCREASES THE RISK OF DEVELOPING DISABLING LONG-TERM CONDITIONS LIKE DIABETES, OBESITY, LIVER DISEASE, HEART DISEASE, DEMENTIA AND SOME FORMS OF CANCER. ALCOHOL ABUSE IS NOT ONLY DAMAGING TO THE BODY AND BRAIN, IT CAN TRAUMATIZE PSYCHOLOGICAL STABILITY CAUSING DEPRESSION, AND IS ONE OF THE LEADING RISK FACTORS FOR SUICIDE. ALCOHOL ABUSE IS THE PRINCIPAL LIFESTYLE-RELATED CAUSE OF DISEASE AND DEATH, MOTOR VEHICLE FATALITIES AND INJURY. DESPITE THE PROFOUND EFFECT ALCOHOL ABUSE HAS ON THE INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY, THE MOST DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCE IS CHEMICAL DEPENDENCE. MANY PEOPLE DRINK IT EVEN THE SCHOLARS ARE VICTIMS ON ALCOHOLISM

TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLISM TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOLISM DOES NOT PRESCRIBE AN EASY CURE FOR CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY, BUT GIVES THE INDIVIDUAL ALL THE TOOLS WITH WHICH TO BUILD A LIFE BASED ON PROMOTING SOBRIETY DAY TO DAY. SINCE ADDICTION AND ALCOHOLISM EFFECT ALMOST EVERY AREA OF AN INDIVIDUAL’S LIFE, THE CHANGES WHICH WILL BE MADE, WHILE SOMETIMES SLOW AT FIRST WILL BE ALL ENCOMPASSING. AFTER COMPLETING DETOX AND REHAB, THE MAINTENANCE OF SOBRIETY WILL BE INTRINSICALLY CONNECTED TO THE WILLINGNESS, OPENNESS AND HONESTY PUT INTO LIVING ONE’S LIFE BY A NEW SET OF PRINCIPLES AND VALUES.  THERE IS NO SINGLE DEFINING TREATMENT APPROPRIATE FOR EVERYONE, AND GENERATING TREATMENT SETTINGS, INTERVENTIONS, AND SERVICES TO AN INDIVIDUAL’S PARTICULAR PROBLEMS AND NEEDS IS CRITICAL TO HIS OR HER ULTIMATE SUCCESS IN RETURNING TO PRODUCTIVE FUNCTIONING IN THE FAMILY, WORKPLACE, AND SOCIETY

STATISTICS OF ALCOHOLISM DEATH NEARLY 88,0007 PEOPLE (APPROXIMATELY 62,000 MEN AND 26,000 WOMEN8) DIE FROM ALCOHOL RELATED CAUSES ANNUALLY, MAKING IT THE THIRD LEADING PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE UNITED STATES.7   IN 2012, ALCOHOL-IMPAIRED-DRIVING FATALITIES ACCOUNTED FOR 10,322 DEATHS (31 PERCENT OF OVERALL DRIVING FATALITIES).9   ECONOMIC BURDEN:   IN 2006, ALCOHOL MISUSE PROBLEMS COST THE UNITED STATES $223.5 BILLION.10   ALMOST THREE-QUARTERS OF THE TOTAL COST OF ALCOHOL MISUSE IS RELATED TO BINGE DRINKING.10

SOLUTIONS ON ALCOHOLISM What is a possible solution for alcoholism?  There are a few possibilities for anyone who is struggling to quit drinking. 1) Individual counseling or therapy sessions 2) Holistic growth  The idea behind holistic growth is that, you try to push yourself to grow personally in all areas of your life.  So instead of just focusing on spiritual growth, you would branch out from that and also focus on physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of your life. Alcoholism and addiction are a progressive disease.   That means that alcoholism and addiction never cures itself
