BRAIN BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING Learning Styles

Reflection statement: Instruction begins when you, the teacher, learn from the learner. Put yourself in his place so that you may understand what he learns and the way he understands it. (Kierkegaard)

Three Categories of diversity Learning styles (taking in and processing) Personality types (perceiving and reacting) Approaches to learning (surface, deep and strategic)

LEARNING STYLES based on Gardner’s multiple intellegence

Learning Styles Take a learning styles quiz here: http://www.edutopia.org/mi-quiz ENTER YOUR RESULTS BELOW: LINGUISTIC % LOGICAL-MATH % VISUAL-SPATIAL % INTERAPERSONAL % INTERPERSONAL % MUSICAL % BODILY-KINETHETIC % NATURALISTIC %

Reflect on your learning style How do you learn best? What type of learning assignments do you find most difficult? Why? How is this reflected in the way you teach? What are the implications for teaching students? Write----Talk

Meyers-Briggs Personality Types

My Results: What is your personality type? Do you think these results are significant? Why or why not?

REFLECTION: Think/Write/Talk How could you use this information as a teacher? Your thoughts…..

APPROACHES TO LEARNING AND STUDYING Work of Marto and Jaljo Three Approaches to Learning Surface Deep Strategic READ A DESCRIPTION OF ONE OF THE CATEGORIES. Can you think of a student(s) that fits this description? What are the implications for working with students?

METAcognition

EFFECTIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES METALEARNING: -Setting Goals -Choose appropriate strategies -Monitoring progress Source: http://nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/styles/metalearning.html

What do you do in your time outside of school  What do you do in your time outside of school? I play Baseball, basketball, and also golf. I enjoy hanging out with friends and helping other people. What activities, sports or clubs are you involved with (or may join this year)? I play Golf, basketball, and baseball for school and in outside clubs or teams. Do you have access to a computer at home? Is it on line? Yes, I can access the web most of the time. What are 2 things that I can do to help you to be successful this year? I would like to be more organized the whole year, not the first two weeks. I would also like to view things, not just lectures.   What are 2 things that YOU can do to help you be successful this year? I will pay more attention in class and not space out. I also will do more work, not just the required. Example of 9th Grade Academy Electronic Portfolio, which is placed in a shared folder for teachers to be able to access Will B.

My Learning Style These are the things that help me to learn: i work better with visual models rather than lectures and talking and explaining. These are things that I find frustrating to learning: I do not like to sit for a long period of time or write long pieces or essays.

ReSULTS OF Learning Styles Quiz LINGUISTIC 50% LOGICAL-MATH 44% VISUAL-SPATIAL 58% INTRAPERSONAL 44% INTERPERSONAL 63% MUSICAL 25% BODILY-KINETHETIC 68% NATURALISTIC 50%

REFLECTIONS ON MY LEARNING STYLE This is what my learning style inventory tells me about the way I learn: Two strongest areas are intrapersonal and bodily- kinestic These are some learning strategies that may be helpful to me: I learn best by being physically active and working with others in groups.

My Goals For 9th grade: Stay organized all year, not the first month. Do more then expected. Learn the system of high school. For High School: Stay involved with sports and clubs. Keep my GPA up throughout high school. Don’t slack at the end of the year.

What will you Do Differently?

Using learning Styles/personality types In the classroom Help students gain a better understanding of how they learn, their strengths and challenges Help students to develop learning strategies that will assist them in using their learning style strengths Select appropriate learning activities for the instructional content, but vary the types of strategies that are used in your classroom Take personal risks, try new strategies, that may not match with your own personal learning styles Encourage students to stretch themselves beyond their comfort zones Use journaling to have students reflect, and share, on their learning in your classroom

Designing lessons Give choices for learning when possible Align the learning activity with the content Build in “think time” before starting students in group work Acknowledge student frustrations when confronted with an activity that does not match their learning style, encourage them to view it as a challenge Design lessons that are broken into 10-15 minute segments, change the learning activity

Understanding Student Differences (Felder and Brent, 2005)

I hope this session has left you with something to THINK ABOUT! Thanks for coming
