Countryside Housing Lesson starter: Do you think housing in the countryside would have been better or worse than that in the cities? Provide reasons for your answer.

Today we will… Identify the differences between city and countryside housing

Thinking Exercise In the country, people built their own homes as there were no homes to rent They were not stupid, but had to rely on the skills they had They could use the materials on the land You are going to design your own rural house with the materials on the next slide…

(if you lived near the sea) You have… Stone As much as you like Dung/mud As much as you like A rope Trees 2 small ones OR Whale bones (if you lived near the sea) Turf OR Dried heather As much as you like

Try and design a rural house with these materials Sketch it in your jotter and label each part You may ONLY use these materials

A Scottish Blackhouse

A typical highland house was called a Blackhouse. Rural Housing Countryside (or rural) housing was often even worse than that in the cities. Farmers built the houses themselves and had to use the materials they had. Few rural homes had amenities like toilets. The houses were poorly ventilated and people lived too close to animals. A typical highland house was called a Blackhouse.

Highland Blackhouse Copy the diagram of the Blackhouse on p25 into your jotter Add the following labels; Turf or dried heather roof Stones to keep the roof down Dry stone dyke walls Gaps for ventilation

Today we will… Identify the differences between city and countryside housing
