Population push and pull factors. Starter: Write down where you would rather live and explain why. B A LO: Be able to describe push and pull factors.

I’m being pulled towards that place. A pull factor is something a place has that makes people want to move there: nice houses, good entertainment, a pleasant environment. Woah!! I’m being pulled towards that place.

Such as; an unfriendly community or poor housing etc. A push factor is something that makes someone want to move away from a place. Such as; an unfriendly community or poor housing etc. Ow!!!! I’m being pushed away from that place!

I don’t want to be a farmer all my life I don’t get enough money I don’t want to be a farmer all my life I don’t get enough money. I will leave and go to the city.

There is the chance to get loads of money here in the city. PULL There is the chance to get loads of money here in the city.

Push Factors Pull Factors Task: Draw a table in your books like this. You will decide if the information is a push or pull factor. Push Factors Pull Factors No electricity in the countryside. Doctors in the city Challenge: Can you think of your own push and pull factors?

Push Factors Pull Factors Did you get it right? Push Factors Pull Factors Being Poor in the country Chance of money in the city No electricity in the countryside Electricity in the city No doctors in the countryside Doctors in the city Family has left the countryside Friends and family live there Only farm jobs available A lot of jobs

Imagine you are a farmer with a family, you have decided to leave the countryside and live in the city….. Write a letter to your neighbour explaining why you are leaving. Think about the push and pull factors that influenced your decision to leave. The countryside’s bad points. The city’s good points.

You need to use your table to give you ideas to write your letter. Task: Imagine you are a farmer with a family, you have decided to leave the countryside and live in the city….. Put yourself in the shoes of the young farmer What is boring about your life? What is exciting about life in the city? Challenge yourself: Evaluate! Do you think push factors are greater in LEDCs or MEDCs? Explain your decision. You need to use your table to give you ideas to write your letter.

Plenary In your pairs think of one push or pull factor. You will need to be prepared to tell the class what it is and then class have to decide if it’s a push or pull factor.
