TITLE of your PROJECT Your Name / yourname@asu.edu Collins / Vizproto– ART 494/598 / Digital Culture / Spring 2014 What is Xbox Kinect? Kinect is the motion control device created by Microsoft to be used with their Xbox 360 console. You use your body (head, hands, and feet) along with spoken commands to control whatever it is you're playing. Microsoft has taken care to emphasize in its ad campaign that with Kinect, YOU are the controller, so that pretty much gives you an idea of what this device is all about. How does it work? The Xbox Kinect does its magic with a powerful array of sensors. It uses a RGB camera and a depth sensor to capture and track your movements. It also has a multi-array microphone whose role is to capture your voice commands. All of these sensors are built into a horizontal bar, which in turn is connected on top of its base, allowing you to place the Kinect either above or just below your TV or monitor. The Kinect also has a motorized pivot that allows it to track your movements across the playing space. Along with the three sensors mentioned above, this allows the Kinect to do full-body 3D motion capture with facial and voice recognition. Kinect can - and will - recognize your face and voice. Abstract A Kinect© structured infra-red scanning device was used to create a “digital avatar” (a computer-based character used in many game programs) based on a pre-existing physical model. Once the geometry of the character was captured, a “rigged character” was created in Maya, enabling the character to be animated. Future research will focus upon integrating the character into an existing animation or game environment.   Research Question How can structured IR scanning processes be utilized to bring an existing physical character model into an animation sequence?    Precedents and Prior Research historical precedents, contemporary artists, designers, scholars, thinkers and tinkerers to whom you feel a debt and/or kinship prior research that relates directly to your research (e.g., pipeline from scanning to animation—viz., “Scud” in the original “Toy Story.”) significance of the project for your discipline, field of expertise, etc. Process description of the process from concept, to exploration of various solutions, to final product. any special equipment, materials and processes utilized, space requirements, budgetary considerations.
