Chinese Developments and Inventions Learning Targets 7.22 and 7.23 Chapter 8 Chinese Developments and Inventions Learning Targets 7.22 and 7.23

Learning Target 7.22 I can summarize the significance of the rapid agricultural, commercial, and technological development during the Song dynasties.

Agricultural Development The Tang Dynasty rulers gave land to farmers. Farmers made many advancements with the large amounts of land. Better irrigation helped crops grow. They developed new kinds of rice that grew well in poor soil. New varieties of rice produced more rice per acre and resisted disease. Farmers began growing tea. China’s population increased because more food was available.

Commercial Development Tang rulers built roads and waterways, making travel in and out of China much easier. Chinese merchants could trade with people in other parts of the world. The Silk Road reopened and once again became a major trade route. New seaports opened along China’s coast to increase trade.

Technological Development During the Tang and Song dynasties, new discoveries and inventions brought change to Chinese society, and later to other parts of the world. The coal-mining industry started when the Chinese realized coal could be used as fuel. It was needed to heat homes and cook food because the Chinese did not have much wood available. They also learned to make steel by heating coal to very high temperatures inside furnaces.

Choose one are of advancements during the Song Dynasty: commercial, agricultural, or technological.
