Agricultural Irrigation System Optimization Review Dan Carney December 7, 2017
Agricultural Irrigation System Optimization Review Progress Update: Eight customers participated in on-farm irrigation system reviews of approximately 3,000 acres during the week of October 16 – 20 Agricultural engineers from the “Irrigation Training and Research Center” collected data on: Watering practices Irrigation equipment Soils Crop requirements Drones operated by Code 3 Media pilots collected color, multi-spectral, and infrared imagery to analyze watering patterns, soil and plant characteristics EMWD staff coordinated logistics and communications A draft project report is currently being prepared by consultants
Participating Farms Farm Description Water Source Irrigation System 1. Sun City – Alfalfa Recycled Hand move with impact rotors 2. Nuevo - Alfalfa Wheel line with impact rotors 3. Hemet - Pumpkins Inline drip emitters 4. Nuevo - Alfalfa Well/Recycled Center pivot & wheel line with impact rotors 5. San Jacinto - Turf 6. Hemet - Alfalfa 7. Hemet – Citrus/Avocado Well Solid set micro-sprinkler 8. Moreno Valley - Alfalfa
Aerial Imagery Data collected from the multi-spectral camera is available online for researchers, agronomists, and growers Information provides insights on pests, diseases, weeds, soil fertility, crop damage from storms, and irrigation trends
Preliminary Findings – Opportunities for Improvement On-Farm Irrigation Systems Standardize irrigation nozzles Improve filtration Optimize pressures EMWD Distribution System Further pressure stabilization Optimize water quality for infiltration Water Allocation Rules Review and update as needed
Recommended Next Steps Present a final draft report to the Board Planning Committee on February 8, 2018 Incorporate Committee’s recommendations and present a final report to the full Board on February 21, 2018 Submit final report and invoice to USBR for grant reimbursement by project completion date of July 31, 2018
