Presentation transcript:

Monthly Numeracy focus: PERCENTAGES OF AN AMOUNT Finding percentages of amounts without a calculator is simple if we break the percentage down into 10% and 1% chunks. Remember these rules: To find 10% of a number, we divide the number by 10. To find 1% of a number, we divide the number by 100. Your maths teachers will be very impressed if you can successfully complete all of the challenges on these slides.

Find 36% of 150 Find 10% of 150 Find 30% of 150 Find 1% of 150 Therefore 36% of 150 = 45 + 9 = 54 150 ÷ 10 = 15 10% = 15 10% = 15 10% = 15 15 x 3 = 45, so 30% of 150 = 45 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5 1% = 1.5 1% = 1.5 1% = 1.5 1% = 1.5 1% = 1.5 1% = 1.5 1.5 x 6 = 9, so 6% of 150 = 9
