NPXI Series of X2 Class Polypropylene Film Capacitors NPXI series – X2 Safety Film Capacitors Stability in capacitive power supply applications NIC Components Corp, a leading global supplier of electronic components, today introduced expanded offering of radial leaded high performance film capacitors, with the addition of NPXI series of X2 class Safety Capacitors. NPXI series is offered in two constructions; internal series and mono constructions. Both constructions address corona discharge issues, and both are upgrades from standard construction film capacitors. The NPXI series is intended for use in voltage dropper capacitive power supplies applications with connection in series with the AC mains, where long lifetime capacitance value stability is a key requirement. Typical applications include low power and low cost power supplies, such as used in smart metering and LED driver applications. Capacitance values range from 0.01uF to 10uF with voltage ratings of 300VAC over -40ᵒC to +110ᵒC operating temperature range. NPXI series utilizes low loss (DF <0.01%) metallized polypropylene film with non-inductive & self-healing wound element construction, for stability under VAC operation, temperature and safe end of life failure mode. NPXI series meets IEC 60068-1 climatic category; damp heat, steady state 40/110/56 conditions and has safety agency listings with UL, cUL, ENEC, CQC. Molded box type construction meets UL-94V-0 flammability test, and is supported in reduced case sizes, for high density circuit designs. NPXH is RoHS compliant, with Pb-Free finish, is supplied in bulk or tape and box (TB) packaging. Standard – Common Usage NPXI Series of X2 Class Polypropylene Film Capacitors NPX & NPXH Series ‘X2’ Safety Cap Classification For Use In Across-the-line Applications; from Line (L) to Neutral (N) Function: Suppression of EMI Standard – Common Usage NPXI Series Special Usage: Series Impedance – Voltage Dropper X2 capacitor 'connected in series with the mains' to create a capacitive power supply for use in low power applications. A capacitive power supply utilizes a series connected capacitor ‘Cs’ (typically an X2 class safety capacitor) to reduce the AC mains voltage to a lower voltage level. The AC voltage is reduced by the capacitors' impedance in series with the load impedance (aka a 'voltage dropper' power supply) Stability of the capacitance value (and impedance) is key to long term performance. Function: Stable Voltage Drop Low Power Operation: 240VAC Example: At 60Hz, a 1.0uF capacitor has reactance of 2652Ω. The circuit current is limited to 240V/2652Ω = 90 mA  Cannot use NPX & NPXH Series in Series Impedance – Voltage Dropper Application Page 5
