Intro to Functions

Vocabulary Formed by the intersection of two number lines – the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y- axis (x,y) example (-2,6) the y value (second) gives the up down movement The horizontal axis on the coordinate plane Consists of points that are not connected “dots” The vertical axis on the coordinate plane Consists of points that are connected The 4 regions into which the x and y axis separate the coordinate plane Set of ordered pairs x values The point (0,0) at which the x and y axis intersect. y – values (x , y) which gives location on the coordinate plane. An illustration of how each element of the domain is paired with an element from the range (x,y) example (-2,6) the x value (first) gives left-right (horizontal) movement

A relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range “no repeated x values” or passes the vertical line test if it is graphed. f(x) it is a way to name a function “f” that is defined by an equation A value substituted for the “x” value The answer – “y” value after evaluating for an “x” input Any VERTICAL line passes through the graph of a function NO MORE THAN 1 time than it Is a function and is considered to have “passed” the vertical line test. The x intercepts also called roots it is the place where the graph touches the x axis. intercepts The place where the graph touches the y axis
