Welcome to Kindergarten

Our Mission Statement Rolling Terrace Elementary is a school where students, staff and families are respectful of individual differences and come together in a positive, nurturing environment to produce independent lifelong learners. A day in the life of your Kindergartener… 8:40 first bell rings – go to classroom 8:40 – 9:00 unpack, eat breakfast 9:00 announcements, instructional day begins 9:00 - 11:25 class instruction 11:25 - 12:10 Lunch 12:10 - 12:35 Recess 12:40 – 1:25 Specials or continue instruction 1:25 – 2:45 class instruction 2:45 – 3:15 Exploration centers, science/social studies 3:25 – Dismissal *schedule changes evolve depending on needs Lili and Charlotte

Involvement Opportunities FIELD TRIPS 3 field trips a year. Limited Chaperones – must complete MCPS required training No siblings permitted AFTERSCHOOL PARENT WORKSHOPS 2 planned events after school for parents and children to learn how to help your child at home. Barb and Lindsey

Mandatory Volunteer Training There is a 30-minute mandatory training (on the computer) about MCPS child abuse and neglect. This will be needed by everyone that wishes to regularly volunteer at the school or on field trips. If you have any questions or need more information, see the front office staff. Barb and Lindsey

How can you help your child at home? Reading- read aloud daily (any language), practice sight words (the, like, can, etc.) Writing - Draw and write, practice handwriting Math - counting, number recognition, number writing Provide regular time and space for homework Regular bedtime every night (a minimum of 10 hours) Izzy and Lili (National Sleep Foundation)

Kindergarten Assessments Reading mCLASS – 3 times/year K – 2 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment KRA-September/October MAP – P math assessment 2 times/year - computerized Ongoing informal assessments in all areas. Terri and Diane

Report Cards Report cards are sent home 4 times in November, February, April, and June. Standards-based; ongoing assessments in all areas. Conferences on Friday, November 10th and 17th (sign up tonight with your child’s teacher) Terri and Diane

Reading Goals Every student reading at least a level 6 by the end of Kindergarten What does a level 6 book look like? Chelsea and Lindsey and Carl

One last note…. Please label ALL of your child’s belongings (backpack, lunch box, sweaters, coats, hats, etc.) Please provide a complete extra set of clothes labeled with your child’s name in a Ziploc bag – these will stay at school. Medication/health policy – see nurse Breakfast 8:40-9:00- please be on time Please remember dismissal is 3:25- please be on time! Send a note if someone else is picking up your child.
