Overview An Environmental House is a completely independent globally oriented dwelling unit. An Environmental House is made from materials that are indigenous to the entire planet. An Environmental House has been designed to reduce our impact on the planet and increase our connection to it. An Environmental House utilizes recycled and low embodied energy materials, passive solar heating and cooling, photovoltaic power system, catch water, solar hot water, gray water and black water treatment systems.

Thermal/Solar Heating Passive Homes. The Sun is a nuclear plant that delivers energy to the earth.

Specific Heat Definition Specific heat capacity is the measure of the heat energy required to increase the temperature of a unit quantity of a substance by a certain temperature interval.

Specific Heat Commons Values Substance Specific Heat Capacity   - cp - (cal/gramoC) (J/kgoC) Air, Dry (Sea Level) 0.24 1005 Asphalt 0.22 920 Bone 0.11 440 Ice (0oC) 0.50 2093 Granite 0.19 790 Sandy Clay 0.33 1381 Quartz Sand 830 Water, Pure 1.00 4186 Wet Mud 0.60 2512 Wood 0.41 1700

Warmth If you want heat, you admit the sun. The sun heats the mass, the mass stores the heat and the insulation won't let it escape.

Summer Design

Insulation & Thermal Mass Air Tight R Value (This value is a measure of a material's thermal resistance)

Common R values Insulation R-Value Material R value(ft^2 °F h/Btu)   Material R value(ft^2 °F h/Btu) Hardwood siding (1 in. thick) 0.91 Wood shingles (lapped) 0.87 Brick (4 in. thick) 4.00 Concrete block (filled cores) 1.93 Fiberglass batting(3.5 in. thick) 10.90 Fiberglass batting(6 in. thick) 18.80 Fiberglass board (1 in. thick) 4.35 Cellulose fiber(1 in. thick) 3.70 Flat glass (0.125 in thick) 0.89 Insulating glass(0.25 in space) 1.54 Air space (3.5 in. thick) 1.01 Free stagnant air layer 0.17 Drywall (0.5 in. thick) 0.45 Sheathing (0.5 in. thick) 1.32

Solar & Wind Electricity Electrical energy is "harvested" from the sun and the wind. PV Panels

Solar & Wind Electricity Photovoltaic panels convert the sun's energy into DC current electricity and is stored in "golf-cart" type batteries. 12 Batteries

Power Organizing Module (POM) A self contained organizer and distributor of electricity.

Water Harvesting Water is caught from roof catchments and channeled. Water is pushed by a pump and filter panel (WOM).

Water Harvesting Water is used in a conventional way. The Toilet is separated from drainage system. Next, this water is then drained into linear biologically developed interior grey water treatment and containment systems.

Water Harvesting Water is heated with the sun and natural gas.

Building with Natural & Recycled Materials Nature of Materials. Indigenous. Fashioned with little or no energy. Thermal mass. Durability. Resilient. Low tech use/Application.

Sustainable/Eco-Friendly Building Materials Recycled automobile tires (walls). Non-treated locally grown timbers (where possible). Recycled timber mulch weatherboard and permanent cladding. Recycled plastic & wood decking that requires no maintenance or staining. Recycled architraves & skirting boards. Bamboo flooring. Natural low VOC woolen carpets. Natural wool insulation. Low VOC paints. Minimizing of building materials waste and recycling where possible.

Contained Sewage Treatment What is it? Use & re-use. Interior botanical cell. Exterior botanical cell.
