Housekeeping Daily Miracle Vitamin (from class 8) How’s it going? Remember, it’s not about learning to spell and remember specific words, it’s about learning to look at parts of words.

Quiz: Lesson Components Put the following lesson components in order: Reading Day Strategy discussion Book orientation HFW Meaning discussion Word Study (phonemic awareness or phonics) During reading Writing Day Writing Discussion Writing About Reading Teaching Points Strategy Discussion Running Record

Homework Review Thinking about the article you read on the three types of writing, share something you tried for: Interactive writing Dictated writing Independent writing

Homework Review The prompt CAN be the same for all three types of writing, what you DO with it is different Should ‘spiral through’ all three types of writing At level 14, dictated and interactive writing are still used, but ‘taper off’ in favor of independent writing Independent writing is NOT the independent writing of writer’s workshop – it’s VERY guided independent writing

Essential Question Why do I need to interpret a running record? How do I use a running record to determine next step(s)?

Foundational Understandings Good readers use strategies to initiate efficient problem-solving plans, monitor their actions, and redirect their thinking when meaning is threatened. What does this mean to you?

Foundational Understandings These higher-level thinking processes are related to three functions: I know what I know I can focus on what is important I need to remember this

Foundational Understandings Good teaching must enable poor readers to develop these processes - the ability to monitor and search.

Discussion What does it mean to monitor? What does it mean to search?
