Mineral Uses Chapter 3 Section 3

Gems Highly prized Rare Generally more colorful then the common form of the mineral Some gems have a crystal structure that allows it to be cut or polished to a higher quality Some are famous such as the Hope Diamond

Useful purposes for Gems Diamonds because of the Mohs Hardness Rating of 10 make them useful as abrasives or cutting tools in industry. Rubies used in certain laser lights Quartz is used in watches because it vibrates when an electric field is applied.

Useful Elements in Minerals Ores- a mineral or rock that contains a useful substance that can be mined for a profit. Aluminum is refined from the ore- bauxite

Vein Minerals Metallic elements can dissolve in fluids Sometimes they become trapped in rocks in the crevices and cracks. Those mineral deposits are referred to as vein minerals.

Minerals containing Titanium Two minerals are the sources of titanium Rutile Ilmenite (IHL muh nite) Both found when magma cools/hardens Durable, lightweight Used in hip replacements, dental implants Found in automobile bodies and bicycle frames Sports equipment like tennis rackets Wheelchairs for people who play competative basketball or racing
