Mantegna’s Crucifixion Looking at the painting, What do you notice about it? (Scenery, characters, composition?)

The Story To know the story of Jesus’ crucifixion. Read the text about Jesus’ crucifixion. Highlight in the text all the things that you can see happening in the picture. Has the artist missed anything out? What? **Why do you think he has chosen to miss these things out? What could be his reasons? The Story To know the story of Jesus’ crucifixion. To consider realism in the painting To reflect on how the painting teaches us more about Jesus’ death

Mantegna’s Crucifixion: Symbolism Using two of these features, explain in your book what you have learned about Jesus death, from looking closely at the painting. **What is the painting teaching you, about the way to heaven? Look at where the road to heaven starts from. Mantegna’s Crucifixion: Symbolism El Greco’s Agony in the Garden, was quite surreal – dreamlike, visionary, not realistic. Mantegna’s crucifixion is not realistic but in a different, symbolic way. On your sheet, write the answers to the following: Platform of crucifixion – what else is it like? Dead trees, Mountains – what feel do they give to the painting? How you you describe them? The city in the background – what could it be? What other place could it symbolise? The road to the city – what could it symbolise? The sky – what do you notice about it? Market place, Stage, altar, gravestone? Jagged, tall, difficult, painful, foreboding - death Jerusalem? Heaven? The way to heaven? Starts with Jesus? Daytime. Lighter further away – why? Unsettling regularity of clouds – planned?

Look at Jesus’ arms on the cross. Are they in front behind flush With the other crosses? What could this be saying? See if you can draw the 3 crosses with the same perspective.

Mantegna’s Crucifixion Part 2: Composition and Character What do you remember learning last lesson about what the scenery symbolised?

Composition or Character 1. Complete the sheet you have been given. In your book, write up two things you have learned about Jesus’ crucifixion from answering the sheet. **What was new/ surprising to you about what you found out? Teach your partner about your topic – composition or character. Repeat with a different partner. 3. Write up in your book 2 things about what they have taught you about their topic.

Draw one of the art objects you have looked at… - scenery - character Say what this made you think about.
