Famous Scottish Victorians By Erin Stewart

Alexander Graham Bell Alexander was born 3rd March 1847, in Edinburgh. He is best known for inventing the telephone. Many inventors had been trying to send the human voice over wire, but Bell was 1st to succeed. He was only 29 when he invented the telephone and the first words spoken over it were.

Robert Louis Stevenson Robert was born on 13th November 1850, Howard Place, Edinburgh. He was an author and he wrote the series of Treasure Island. The books are two of the most popular books for children. He wrote many other stories like; The Body Snatcher, The Merry Men, Olalla, etc. He married a woman called Fanny Stevenson, they were married for 14 years. He died on 3rd December 1894.

Marion Gilchrist Marion Gilchrist was born on the 5th February 1864, Bothwell. Marion left school at the age of 13 to work on her family’s farm but continued to study taking correspondence and later attended Hamilton Academy. In 1887, she was admitted as an arts student to the Queen Margaret College for women in Glasgow and later awarded a Lady Literate in Arts from St. Andrews University.

Marion Gilchrist In 1892, Queen Margaret College became part of Glasgow University, allowing Marion to begin studies in medicine. She graduated in 1894 with a high commendation. Marion later became a general practitioner and ophthalmic surgeon as well as being an active suffragette. She was a prominent member of the British Medical Association for 54 years and the first woman chairman of its Glasgow division. She sadly died on 7th September 1952, Glasgow.
