Presentation transcript:

12/11/17- Monday Standard: MWH-7.1 Objective: Identify and describe the MAIN causes of World War I. Argue which factor contributed most to the outbreak of WWI and justify your reasons with factual information. BR: Brainstorm ways in which Americans exhibit nationalism. What would Americans do if some other country would try to take control over ours? How would it make us feel? How would you react?

M = military A = alliances I = imperialism N = nationalism Causes of World War I M = military A = alliances I = imperialism N = nationalism

The Rise of Nationalism • Europe enjoys peace in late 1800s but problems lie below surface because of growing nationalism, continued imperialism, and militarism • Growing nationalism leads to competition among nations • Nationalism in the Balkans leads many groups to demand independence NEXT

Ask your partner… Think back in history… What caused such nationalism to develop in European countries that we have learned about in history?

Imperialism and Militarism • Competition for colonies (imperialism) stirs mistrust among European nations • This competition and mistrust gets European countries to engage in a military arms race • Militarism—policy of glorifying military power, preparing army

12/12/17- Tuesday Standard: MWH-7.1 Analyze the relative importance of economic and political rivalries, ethnic and theological conflicts, social class, militarism, and imperialism as underlying causes of World War I and World War II, including the role of nationalism and propaganda in mobilizing civilian populations around the world to support the two world wars. Objective: Argue which factor contributed most to the outbreak of WWI and justify your reasons with factual information. BR: How does imperialism promote nationalism and militarism?

Bismarck Forges Early Pacts • Germany’s Otto von Bismarck works to keep peace in Europe after 1871 • Believes France wants revenge for loss in 1870 Franco-Prussian War • Seeks to isolate the French with a series of treaties and alliances: - signs treaty with Russia in 1881 - forms Triple Alliance—Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy—in 1882

Shifting Alliances Threaten Peace • Kaiser Wilhelm II becomes German ruler in 1888 • Foreign policy changes begin in 1890 with dismissal of Bismarck - alliance with Russia was dropped; Russia then allies with France - began an effort to strengthen German navy, which alarms Britain • Britain, France, Russia form Triple Entente alliance in 1907 NEXT

NEXT

• Serbia outraged, sees itself as rightful ruler of these Slavic lands A Restless Region • Many ethnic groups in Balkans win independence during early 1900s from the Ottoman Turks and their empire • New nation of Serbia made up largely of Slavs had hoped to gather all areas with Slavs as part of its nation • Austria-Hungary feared a Slavic rebellion and annexed the Slavic region of Bosnia and Herzegovina • Serbia outraged, sees itself as rightful ruler of these Slavic lands NEXT

The “Powder Keg” of Europe NEXT

Ask your partner… If the USA were to decide to enter the war, which side should they choose: alliance or entente? Why?

Archduke Franz Ferdinand & His Family The Assassination: Bosnia, Sarajevo The Assassin A Shot Rings Throughout Europe • Serbian rebel (Gavrilo Princip—19 yrs old—member of the Black Hand) kills Austro-Hungarian royal official in June 1914 when the Archduke and his wife visited the capital • Austria declares war on Serbia; Russia comes to aid of Serbia

The Black Hand... The main objective of the Black Hand was the creation, by means of violence, of a Greater Serbia by ridding Bosnia of Austrian Rule Its stated aim was: "To realize the national ideal, the unification of all Serbs. This organization prefers terrorist action to cultural activities; it will therefore remain secret."

Exit Ticket: Answer and turn into your class box on your way out of the door. What 3 nations belonged to the Triple Entente? What 3 nations belonged to the Triple Alliance? What nation annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908? What nation’s heir to the throne was assassinated in 1914 by a Serbian nationalist? Based on your knowledge thus far, choose which you believed helped the most to set the stage for World War I—nationalism, imperialism, militarism, or the alliance system? Justify your answer with information from today’s lesson.
