MS Learner-Centered Science Session Lighting the way for student-centered learning Music- Fallout Boy- “Light Em Up” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7YM9gAVeMs http://www.asburylive.org/news/ignite-for-young-adults/ Tiffany Wendland – Coordinator Amy Hughes - Resource Teacher @BCPSSci BCPS Office of Science

Are You More Like Accelerator or the brakes? A cruise or a hike? A slide or a swing? 2 mins – Icebreaker – share with your elbow partner, explain your choice and introduce yourself

https://padlet.com/twendland/MSstatScience Welcome T-P-S What does it mean to be a science teacher in a learner-centered school? Share your thoughts on the following padlet: https://padlet.com/twendland/MSstatScience 5 mins How will being a lighthouse school change how you teach?

Outcomes I can identify strategies to promote learner-centered science classrooms. I can analyze a model science lesson using the Learner-Centered Environments: Professional Learning Tool. I can access resources to assist in designing learner- centered lessons. 10 mins

Model Lesson ANALYSIS How Small are Atoms? 12 mins Atoms from current curriculum vs revised lesson - one chunk of a lesson that shows where we are going

Model Lesson At your tables, review the Model lesson plan, How Small are Atoms? Underline different teaching strategies. Box different learning styles addressed. *Star* where checks for learning occur (or could occur) 10 mins Checks for learning = formative assessment

Digging Deeper Lesson – Identify the learner-centered features Follow-up Discussion: What is a probe? How was the probe used in the lesson? What was the significance of the “World’s Smallest Video” in the lesson? How does this lesson incorporate shifts towards NGSS? How is the explanation organized to allow for student choice and differentiation? Identify any checks for learning in the lesson. How were they placed to maximize student-teacher feedback? How was technology incorporated into the lesson? What other ways could you incorporate technology into the lesson? 30 mins - Here is where the curriculum is going Where is the choice? Where could you incorporate more choice? Work with a partner to answer one of these discussion questions. Review each How are these represented in the LCE PLT?

Learner-Centered Environments Professional Learning Tool 37 mins - How familiar are you with this tool? Take 2 mins to review What strategies did you come up with that are in this tool? Here is the answer to LCE Need copies

HOW DO WE GET THERE? Transition RESOURCES

eLearningResources Allow time to access and review. Consider how these resources could be helpful in designing LC lessons. Example?

Discovery Education Streaming and My DE Allow time to access. Ask who is currently using DE resources? How could these be helpful in designing LC lessons? Example?

Discovery ED Allow time to access. Ask who is currently using Board Builder? How does this BB provide options for student choice?

Digital Content Allow time to access. How could these be helpful in designing LC lessons? Examples?

Additional Resources! Other sources – Allow time to access the wiki. Reflection Instructional Practices Red - What do we need to STOP? Yellow - What should we CONTINUE doing? Green - What do we need to START doing? Use colored PostIt Notes to have participants write one practice for each category. Compile responses on group stoplight chart. Debrief patterns.
