The Beatitudes Matthew 5:2-12

The Poor in Spirit Not lacking in faith or love Those who have a humble spirit and thus depend on God – Matt. 18:1-4 The tax collector was such a person – Luke 18:10-13

Those Who Mourn Specifically, over their spiritual poverty David is an example of this – Psalm 51:3-4 We must first acknowledge our sins- unless we’re first poor in spirit, we cannot mourn over our spiritual state – 2 Cor. 7:8-10

The Meek Moral quality of humility and gentleness Not out of weakness Consider Moses: He wasn’t weak or timid – Ex. 32:19-20 Yet he didn’t lash out when personally attacked – Num. 12:1-3

Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness To earnestly desire In this case, desire to see God’s will become a reality – 2 Cor. 5:18-21 Paul had this mindset – Phil. 3:7-14 Those who acknowledge their own spiritual poverty will seek God’s righteousness
