Arthur Conan Doyle

“CHILDHOOD” Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Doyle's mother, Mary, loved reading. When Doyle was a child she told him unusual and strange stories with great enthusiasm, developing her son's imagination.

“STUDIES” From 1876 to 1881, Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School.   While studying, Doyle began writing short stories.

“DR JOSEPH BELL” At medical school, Doyle met Professor Dr Joseph Bell, with strong powers of observation.   Later, Doyle created his famous character detective, Sherlock Holmes, inspired by the personality of his teacher.

“SHERLOCK HOLMES” On 20 November 1886 his novel, A Study in Scarlet, introduced the character of Detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr Watson. With the stories of his crime fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, Doyle has become a very famous writer.

“SHERLOCK HOLMES” "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" is one of 56 short stories by Sherlock Holmes written by Doyle. The story was first published in the Strand Magazine in February 1892.

“SHERLOCK HOLMES” Doyle wrote 60 mysterious stories, with the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Watson. This is an illustration of Dr Watson watching Sherlock Holmes in The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual.

“SHERLOCK HOLMES” In 1928, the last twelve stories Doyle wrote about Sherlock Holmes were published in a compilation called The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes.

“SHERLOCK HOLMES” In 1893, Doyle wanted to write about other things, especially about spiritualism. So he decided to kill his character Sherlock Holmes. However, in 1901, Doyle reintroduced Sherlock Holmes in a new book and later brought him back to life in The Adventure of the Empty House.

“SHERLOCK HOLMES” Over 130 years after its creation by Doyle, Sherlock Holmes is still the most famous fictional detective of all times. There is a Statue of Sherlock Holmes in Picardy Place in Edinburgh, the street where his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born.

“PERSONAL LIFE” In 1885, Doyle married his first wife, Louisa Hawkins. The couple had a daughter and a son. Louisa died of tuberculosis in 1906. In 1907 Doyle married Jean Leckie. The couple had two sons and a daughter.

“SPORT” Doyle enjoyed playing cricket, football and skiing. He helped to popularize skiing because he was the first one to bring this sport from Scandinavia to Switzerland.

“WRITER” In 1902, Doyle was knighted by King Edward VII, for a pamphlet that justified the involvement of Great Britain in the Boer War.

“LIFE IN POLITICS” Doyle ran twice for the elections to the parliament of the United Kingdom in 1900 and in 1906. In both elections he had many votes but he was never elected.

There is a statue of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Crowborough, UK. “WORKS” Doyle was a writer, a journalist and a public figure. As a writer he was very creative and wrote almost 200 novels, short stories, plays, poems, historical books and pamphlets. There is a statue of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Crowborough, UK.

“DEATH” Doyle died of a heart attack in Crowborough, England on July 7, 1930, with 71 years old.
