GAANN Talking Points GAANN Technical Assistance Workshop September 29, 2006 Cosette Ryan, Graduate Team Leader

GAANN Fellowships Given only to a U.S. citizen, national or a permanent resident. GAANN is a need-based program. The statute requires that Title IV, Part F guidelines are used to determine the fellows’ level of need. Each GAANN fellow must complete a FAFSA in order for need and stipend level to be determined.

GAANN Fellowships (cont’d) Each fellowship consists of a stipend and institutional payment. The maximum stipend a fellow is eligible for in FY 2006 is $30,000. GAANN funds may not be used to exceed the fellow’s stipend amount as determined by the needs analysis.

GAANN Fellowships (cont’d) GAANN requires a supervised teaching experience. Each GAANN fellow must have at least one academic year of supervised teaching. Grantees have the flexibility to decide when each fellow will begin his or her supervised teaching experience.

GAANN Fellowships (cont’d) Duration of a GAANN grant GAANN grants are awarded for a period of three years. Continuation funding is awarded annually. A student may be awarded a GAANN fellowship at any point in his or her academic career.

GAANN Fellowships (cont’d) You will be required to begin recruiting fellows in year one. Of the FY 2004 funded GAANN departments, 90% began recruiting fellows in year one. By end of year two (second budget period), you will only receive funding for the fellows you have recruited at that time.
