HBCU/ASERL Project & Exchange July 12-July 23, 2010 Joyner Library, East Carolina University Greenville, NC By Ms. Morgan M. Montgomery Reference Librarian, Claflin University

Project Objective Design and implement a series of standard Information Literacy classes designed for freshmen, upper level, and thesis level research. Provide resources for both on campus and off campus students and the tools to research effectively.

Lessons Learned Learned the infrastructure for creating lesson plans. Learned the importance of pre and post assessment when creating lessons plans. Read extensively on the methodology of teaching in the library profession. Created a subject guide utilizing LibGuides. Learned how to utilize Skype when delivering virtual reference services. Learned the importance of tone when speaking in front of an audience. Met one on one with Joyner’s various subject specialist reference librarians.

Outcomes Project Outcome: Mission Statement: The outcome/goal of my project is to realize at a 20% increase among students in preparation for the academic and scholarly research by educating them about the library’s resources and how to utilize them effectively in preparation for graduate school. Lesson Plans: I learned about the importance of utilizing assessment tools to shape your lesson plan. Specifically, the need to create Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) which are specific skills that you want the students to be able to take away after your Information Literacy classes. I was able to create one lesson plan specifically for Freshmen students. There are 3 steps to a lesson plan: *End Result or SLO *Instructional Method *Active Learning Exercise LibGuides: Great tool for creating subject specific guides for classes. Can collaborate with the faculty to feature resources regularly utilized in classes. Can provide resources for distance education students and outreach learning. Mission Statement: Visionary Reference Revealed H.V. Manning Library’s Information Literacy program supports the missions of the Manning Library and Claflin University. By designing course-related library instruction, utilizing the latest instructional technology, and engaging in a student centered approach students will be prepared to engage in scholarly research. The information literacy program is founded on the principles of the Association for College and Research Libraries standards for information literacy competencies.
