Procurement of Nb3Sn strand for coils assembled at CERN A. Ballarino, L. Bottura, L. Oberli 11 T Dipole Meeting, 4/10/2011

Status of R&D Development - Preamble “Standard” wire: RRP® : Strand  = 0. 7 mm NbTa 108/127 Filament   46 µm RRR > 60 Jc(12 T) > 2650 A/mm2 Non-Cu% = 45 %-49 % Strand twist pitch = 12-16 mm PIT : Strand  = 1 mm NbTa 192 Filament   50 µm RRR > 150 Jc(12 T)  2400 A/mm2 Cu-Non Cu ratio = 1.25 Strand twist pitch = 24 mm

Status of R&D Development - Preamble Specification for “final” wire – Price Enquiry June 2011: Strand  = 0. 7 mm Filament  < 30 µm Strand twist pitch = 17 mm RRR > 100 Ic(12 T) > 474 A Jc(12 T) > 2650 A/mm2 n(15 T, 4.2 K) > 30 Development aiming at reaching targets of Jc, RRR and filament size as needed for an accelerator-type conductor

What do we have today ? 27 km of “standard” RRP® 108/127 – 46 µm filament size – ordered in June 2010 and delivered in July 2011. Qualification of the strand in process In addition: 20 km of “standard” RRP® 108/127 – 46 µm filament size. Delivery expected by December 2011/January 2012 1 km of PIT, 0.7 mm  and 44 m filament size, Jc  2500 A/mm2 – from a development billet processed by Bruker at the request of CERN in 2010. To be delivered in the next coming weeks (first delivery of 0.7 mm diameter PIT strand)  47 km of strand available by January 2012

Answers to Price Enquiry DO-26957/TE (Sept 2011) Request for 45 km of strand addressed to OST, Bruker and Luvata Luvata - Declined OST - Offer for 45 km for strand of which: 30 km with filament diameter of about 36 m (meeting Jc and RRR specification) 15 km with filament diameter of about 32 m (R&D development, best effort Jc and RRR) Bruker – Offer for 45 km of strand (offer in negotiation): 45 km with filament size of about 44 m (meeting Jc and RRR specification) NB Not yet a “standard” strand, but still a development product + 90 km of strand available by November 2012 Tot  137 km of strand by November 2012

Strategy for procurement of Nb3Sn strand Large quantity of “standard” qualified conductor for prototype coil production Future Orders Smaller quantity of R&D conductor developed with the goal of meeting the “final” Jc, RRR and filament size requirements

Strategy for procurement of Nb3Sn strand Proposal: by beginning 2012: call for tender for the procurement of 200 km of strand – “standard conductor”- to be delivered by end 2012. Filament diameter: 40-50 µm To be followed by call for tenders for the procurement of the strand for the series production Tot  337 km of strand by end 2012
