Essential Question: What are the functions and components of operating systems, programs, and networks?

Software

Software Software sends instructions to the hardware to perform necessary tasks. Also called programs. Two types of software: Operating system Application Computers read binary code.

Operating system software Click here to play video. What are the three most common operating systems for personal computers? Also known as system software. Controls and manages computer’s memory, processes, software and hardware connected to the computer. Ensures that your computer is operating properly. Provides an interface that helps you interact with the computer. Microsoft Windows Mac OS X Linux

Operating system software What are some operating systems for your mobile devices (phones, tablet computers, MP3 players): Apple iOS  Windows Phone  Google Android.

Operating system software A user interface can be text- based or graphics-based. Most operating systems have a graphical user interface (GUI, pronounced gooey). Use the mouse to click on icons, buttons, and menus, and everything is clearly displayed on the screen using a combination of graphics and text. Windows GUI Mac OS X GUI

Platform The hardware and the operating systems together. Programs, also called applications use the platform to perform tasks.

Application software Click here to play video. Application software is software that that works with the operating system to meet a specific need or perform a specific task such as: Write letters Perform calculations Send e-mail Create illustrations Play games Watch movies Communicate with other computers

Examples of application software Word Processing Software -allows you to create, edit, and print text documents, such as letters and reports. Microsoft Word Spreadsheet Software-used to organize information and perform calculations, such as electronic gradebooks, electronic accounting. Microsoft Excel

Examples of application software Database Software- allows you to create an electronic filing system, such as an electronic card catalog. Microsoft Access Presentation Graphic Software- allows you to present your information in the form of slides. You can add sound, pictures, etc. Microsoft PowerPoint

Examples of application software Multimedia Software--allows information to presented through audio, video, and animation, in addition to text and graphics. Real Player Web Browser Software—used to access and view websites. Google Chrome Firefox Explain how a web browser works: The browser contacts the web server and requests information. The web server sends the information back to the Web browser which displays the results on the computer or other device.

Examples of application software Communication Software-- used by computers to exchange messages and files with other people in a digital format. Microsoft Outlook What are some other types of software? Name some mobile apps you use. Explain how a web browser works: The browser contacts the web server and requests information. The web server sends the information back to the Web browser which displays the results on the computer or other device.

Network Network-a group of computers and associated devices that are linked together to facilitate sharing information and devices. Computers on the network can communicate with each other.

Network components Server– the main computer on a network that provides services to other computers on the network. It decides which computers are allowed to access the hardware and software on the network.

Network components Workstation– a computer connected to a network. It is used to access the hardware and software on a network. Communication channel- a path or link that connects computers or peripheral devices to transfer information. Cables, wireless connections, etc.

Types of networks Local Area Network (LAN)-connects devices within a limited area such as a home or a small group of offices.

Types of networks Wide Area network (WAN)- connects devices in geographically separated areas. You can use the resources of a WAN to connect two or more LANs by using long wires, optical cables and satellites. The Internet is a example of a WAN

The internet The Internet is a worldwide collection of public networks that are linked to each other for information exchange. The Internet started as a network to facilitate communication between government and educational departments in the United States.
