Learning to Earn and Demonstrate Exemplary Respect… LEADER

What is LEADER? Developed through a collaboration between WCPSS and RPD, the LEADER program is designed to help students: Understand the positive role of law enforcement Learn the impact of personal decisions and actions on themselves and others The program consists of 2 components: Classroom instruction – Six 45 minute lessons for all 5th graders. Mentoring – Officers will be available to every school for 12 half-days throughout the school year (18 for year-round)

History of LEADER… In the Fall of 2014, district leadership met with RPD leadership in an effort to continue a partnership which started with the DARE program. Recognizing data that demonstrated that DARE may not be current for use with today’s students, members of academics and RPD reached out to neighboring districts to examine alternative programs to DARE. The LEADER program combines elements of the old program, other programs, and new, district-created ideas.

Who will participate in LEADER? 5th graders in all elementary schools in the Raleigh Police Department jurisdiction. 43 Schools – Everyone here today  Our superintendent and chief of police believe in the importance of this program. The RPD has increased the number of instructors from 2 to 5 to make sure all schools have an RPD instructor for this program.

What is Taught? Police Role and Safety Bullying Role Modeling and Peer Pressure Family Relationships Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs Decision Making & Goal Setting

Mentoring 10 Teacher-selected students Extra time with officers Work on projects aligned with units to give them a positive role in the school. Examples – Create a PSA about Police Role and Safety for the School, assist with K-1 at recess or read to K-1 students to demonstrate how to be a Role Model, judge poster/poetry/song contests for Bullying and ATOD themes.

Calendar Officers have been assigned to schools to instruct each of the six lessons. They have flexible hours on those days to accommodate classroom schedules. Year-round has less flexibility, but officers can work with schedules.

Contact Your school has been assigned an instructor from the RPD Please take a moment in the next two days to complete the google form linked to today’s principals’ wiki agenda in the LEADER section This will inform the officer of their main point of contact at your school
