Create a slab bowl or platter Create a slab bowl or platter. Smooth all sides and your piece keep leather hard.

Paint with 4-5 coats of glaze, allowing glaze to dry between coats Paint with 4-5 coats of glaze, allowing glaze to dry between coats. It’s dry when your finger won’t leave a mark.

At the end of each class, store your project in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel so that it will stay leather hard.

Sketch out the design you intend to use Sketch out the design you intend to use. Size it to match your bowl or platter.

Lay your design on top of your bowl or platter Lay your design on top of your bowl or platter. Trace over your design with a colored pencil.

Make sure the glaze is dry before you start tracing Make sure the glaze is dry before you start tracing. The colored pencil will help you see where you have already traced.

Remove the paper, your pencil will have left a slight indentation Remove the paper, your pencil will have left a slight indentation. Use a sgraffito tool to remove the lines of glaze.

Continue to take out each line of your design Continue to take out each line of your design. Return your project to the plastic bag with the damp paper towel after each class.

Use a soft, dry brush to remove the scraps of clay you are carving out.

Once all of the clay ‘crumbs’ are removed, go over each of your lines with a thin coat of clear glaze.

Fire one time at bisque temperature for your clay body.

Finished student work, BCHS 2017-2018.
