Develop your Memory Just reading through notes or exercise books the night before an exam won’t work. Your brain is like a muscle. Exercise it to make it stronger. Talk - Phil

Memory techniques You need to transfer information from one place to another Look at a piece of information for a short amount of time. Try to remember it Move to a different part of the room and write down what you remember Go back and ‘fetch’ some more information Keep going until you know it all! talk

Revision – Key Word Cards Place all the cards with the * facing up. Take it in turns to work out what is on the other side. Turn over to see if you are right. If Yes remove the card, if No the card stays in play

Plus a few ideas… ‘Post-it’ notes are great for keywords, ideas, quotes, formula, tricky spellings. Stick them up in places where you spend a lot of time. The information will start to soak in.

Make a recording of yourself talking about key information Make a recording of yourself talking about key information. Listen whenever you can Revise with friends/family – take turns to give key points to answer a question about a topic so everyone is on the spot Reduce information – try to keep reducing your notes into a few pages/key words. Big challenge – whole topic on a flashcard

Mind Maps

Mind Maps Use plain paper landscape style Start with a central image preferably using different colours Thick branches come from the centre with big ideas and then become thinner with supporting details. Different colours for each branch Write single words along the branches. Try to make the words fill up the branch length Draw simple pictures or symbols to help create associations Make any links you can see between the bigger branches

First World War - key words

Barbed wire Rat Machine gun Trench foot Duckboard Sandbag Shrapnel Periscope Fire step Bully beef Fleas Bayonet

As I walked down the path to my house I could hear a clattering noise as there were duckboards on top of the path. I couldn’t get in through the front door as sandbags had been piled up next to it. When I moved them I finally got into the hall and was horrified to see a rotten trench foot sticking out of one of my wellies. I went through the living room and saw, in the ash from the fire, (a) step print. In the kitchen there was some rotten bully beef on the table with fleas buzzing around it. I went up to the bathroom and could hear machine gun noise coming from next door. I used my periscope to look out of the window and saw my crazy next door neighbour shooting at a rat. I saw red, grabbed my bayonet from next to the toothbrushes and went round to sort the neighbour out. After all, I am President of the Save the Rodent society. Sadly I couldn’t get to him as he had put barbed wire all round his garden fence. So, I just grabbed lumps of shrapnel from one of my plant pots and threw them in his general direction.

Transformation Activities: Text into Pictures Listen carefully to this new version of a very old story. You have to turn the details into a series of visual images. You are allowed to use a maximum of 5 words. The rest of the information must be shown as pictures, symbols or diagrams. Numbers are free!
