Greenwich Get Active Progamme GIC – cycling project Identified a need to support people attending the Mosque to get more active. The Imam to explore the idea of a cycling club at the Mosque Long standing partnership between GIC and CACT health Improvement team GIC initiated a conversation with CACT Greenwich Get Active Progamme

Volunteers from Limited Edition Cycling Club Greenwich Police Greenwich Police were only too happy to dispose of the bikes – The Bikes were released into the custody of CACT who proceeded to get the bikes roadworthy for the young people. With the support from… Volunteers from Limited Edition Cycling Club

Greenwich Police & RABW Police and Army volunteers worked with adults and young people from the Mosque – teaching them vital maintenance skills and using tools which many had not used before since few had bikes of their own or in the family. Once roadworthy, the group was ready to engage with: Limited Edition Cycling Club

RBG & Limited Edition Cycling Club RBG Cycle Trainers visited the GIC group weekly and provided necessary cycling training to make sure everyone was a competent rider… RBG and Limited Edition

Awards and Funds Multi-Agency support from across the borough has led to: RBG, CACT and Limited Edition supported at a number of meetings to develop a grant application Awarded CCFL (community cycling fund) grant in November 2014 Nominated as a finalist for the London Cycling Awards 2015 coming 2nd in the “Community Project of the Year” category.

Benefits to GIC & wider community Positive engagement with the Police and Army officers Learning new skills – cycle maintenance Engagement with RBG cycle training team and experienced cyclists from Limited Edition Cycling Club, as mentors, has improved community cohesion, trust and understanding of cultures. Changed the community’s perception of cycling from a risky activity to a positive and safe one.

Participant Feedback “This whole experience has been eye-opening! I’ve discovered new areas of south-east London that I didn’t know about and I’ll certainly be cycling more often from now.” (Salman, 20) “GIC CC has been a great opportunity for me to socialise and meet new people. It is something I recommend to my peers on a daily basis.” (Najib, 19) “GIC Cycling club has got me being more active and living a healthier lifestyle, when my legs get tired i just tell them to shut up and keep going” ( Yahya 23 )
