Classifying Matter: Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Liz LaRosa www.middleschoolscience.com 2009 updated 2015 1
Outcomes and Criteria 7M5 Interpret simple models that represent elements, mixtures and compounds. E Level Identify simple elements, mixtures and compounds. D Level Identify elements, mixtures and compounds from given representative models. M Level Interpret and explain why given models represent elements, compounds or mixtures.
Elements Atoms Molecules Compounds Pure Substances A sample of matter that has definite physical and chemical properties. Elements Atoms Molecules Compounds
Elements Pure substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
Compounds Pure substances composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Made of elements in a specific ratio that is always the same. CO2 Has a chemical formula. Can only be separated by chemical means not physical . H2O NaCl
Mixtures A combination of two or more pure substances that are not chemically combined. Substances held together by physical forces, not chemical. No chemical change takes place. Each item retains its own properties in the mixture. They can be separated physically.
What Do You Think? Is it ……. Compound An element contains just one type of atom. A compound contains two or more types of atom joined together. A mixture contains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically. Compound
