Communication Skills

When in a group discussion you should: Clear your desk Free of distractions (pencils, pens, erasers, binders, i-Pad, books, paper) Make eye contact look at the speaker while they are talking Sit still and upright do not fidget or put your head on the desk Give your undivided attention to the speaker avoid distractions (talking to friend, looking out the window, daydreaming

When responding: Speak clearly Piggy back on what the speaker shared Not too fast, don’t rush your words Piggy back on what the speaker shared Do not restate what they just said Speak at an appropriate volume Lets not whisper or shout! Read the groups body language If they seem bored…spice it up, if they are excited…share more, if they are angry…stop and discuss

When listening in your group: Makes eye contact Look directly at the speaker Is not distracted by other things Move any items from your desk that will take attention away from the speaker Do not interrupt the speaker Wait until they finish a thought before you respond Respond using body language
