God reveals his name. Exodus 1-12

Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. Exodus 3:13-15

God reveals his name We don’t have much of a record of Moses serving the Lord prior to this time.

God reveals his name We don’t have much of a record of Moses serving the Lord prior to this time. It would appear from this the children of Israel were not really following the Lord.

Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”  But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.” Exodus 5:1-2

Pharaoh reacts to this demand with arrogance. Scholars debate the identity of this Pharaoh: Thutmose II, Amenhotep II, Ramses the Great. Moses does not record the names of any of the Pharaohs in the Pentateuch. Why does he fail to record the names of Pharaohs he knew?

God reveals his name Today we know the name of the Lord, but we don’t know the name of the Pharaoh.

God now sends ten plagues upon Egypt. God reveals his name God now sends ten plagues upon Egypt.

For by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth. But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth. Exodus 9:15-16

The final plague is directed at Pharaoh himself.

The final plague is directed at Pharaoh himself. The Egyptians viewed Pharaoh as a god who provided their nation with protection.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these signs of mine among them, and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and of your grandson how I have dealt harshly with the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them, that you may know that I am the Lord.” Exodus 10:1-2

The final plague is directed at Pharaoh himself. The Egyptians viewed Pharaoh as a god who provided their nation with protection. However, Pharaoh could not protect them from the judgement of God.

The final plague is directed at Pharaoh himself. The Egyptians viewed Pharaoh as a god who provided their nation with protection. However, Pharaoh could not protect them from the judgement of God. Instead, the only protection was the shed blood of a lamb.

His name is nothing in comparison to the name of the Lord. God reveals his name Today we know the name of the Lord, but we don’t know the name of the Pharaoh. His name is nothing in comparison to the name of the Lord.

This story reveals both the judgment and mercy of the Lord.
