Incident Management Division U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi Incident Management Division
14NOV16, Sector Corpus Christi received notification of a rig that was discharging an unknown product in Corpus Christi Bay. IMD arrived on scene with TGLO and discovered a 300 ft by 3 mile light silver sheen. Investigation led to the discovery that White Marlin Platform 49 had a pinhole leak.
White Marlin Platform operator arrived on scene and shut well in within the hour. An estimated 15 BBLs (630 gal) of natural gas condensate discharged over the course of 8 hours. The sheen dissipated naturally and the faulty product line was replaced the following day.
20DEC16, Sector Command Center was notified of a crude oil spill in Taft, TX that occurred on 12DEC16. 75 BBLs of crude oil was discharged from a hole in a storage tank and travelled almost 2,000ft to Chiltipin Creek, a tributary of Copano Bay. Heavy rains the day of the spill caused the secondary containment to fail allowing the oil to reach the creek.
The RP immediately contracted an oil spill response organization to commence cleanup efforts upon discovery of the spill. A multi agency response was initiated including response personnel from TRRC, TGLO, and Sector Corpus Christi IMD. Approximately 60 BBLs of emulsified oil was recovered from the creek over a 4 week period.
