Housing Conditions Lead poisoning Asthma Carcinogenic air Injury 40% of diagnosed asthma cases among children is believed to be due to residential exposures. Carcinogenic air Injury 4 million ER visits annually Psychological distress - crowded & poor housing conditions

Housing Affordability Limited to neighborhoods with fewer resources Paying more for housing leaves less for other basic needs 17 million households pay more than 50% of their income on housing Families are limited to choosing to live in neighborhoods with fewer health promoting resources If a family is stuck paying more for housing than they can really afford then they are unable to meet other basic needs; such as nutrition, health care 17 million households pay more than 50% of their income on housing

Local Issues Safety at home – injury due to falling Walkable neighborhoods Food deserts Homeless families – Lack of affordable housing Medical Respite Housing We hear and see the same issues locally in many aspects of our work and many of the tables we sit at. Safety at home – injury due to falling & other results of poor housing conditions Walkable neighborhoods – access to resources, including employment, medical care Food deserts Story: hear from members who can’t follow their dr.’s orders to change their diet because they rely on a friend to drive them to the grocery store and can only buy non-perishable foods once month. Homeless families – Lack of affordable housing Story: couple evicted and found it very challenging to maintain healthy lifestyle/ health improvements they had learn through 12 wk YMCA program. The impact of not having an address Physical impacts of not being warm and dry Medical Respite Housing – need for housing so that homeless individuals can be safely discharged from the hospital. Story: members delaying needed surgery because they have nowhere to go home to once discharged. One woman who delayed the breast cancer surgery she needed.

JCC Homeless Services & Housing Shower & Laundry Trailer Drinking Water Heather’s Haven and Starting Strong Apts. Hope Village Homeless Services - Shower /Laundry Trailer: Available every Friday. Provides a rare chance to shower and have clean clothes – opens opportunities for employment and services by reducing discrimination based on hygiene and increasing self confidence. Water: supported Rogue Retreat providing water during the summer when it was consistently over 100 and there are very few places for people to get free water. Water fountains are turned off, restaurants charge for a cup or show them the door, get a ticket for drinking out of a hose on private property. Housing – Heather’s Haven: Funded Rogue Retreat taking over this property in 2015. Now two houses that can house and provide case management to 10 women who would otherwise be living on the street after exiting a recovery program. RR has seen this stability play a crucial role in preventing relapse helping the women move on to independent, healthy lives as well as ensuring the investment that was made into their treatment, $5k to $15k. Starting Strong Apartments: 2 units - For women who are coming out of recovery and are pregnant or have children under 3 yrs. Case management.
