Key Issue 1 - Where are Ethnicities Distributed? Ch. 7 Ethnicity Key Issue 1 - Where are Ethnicities Distributed? For APHG Classes – 12/5 for 2A, 3A, 4A 12/6 for 4B

How are people categorized? Ethnicity is identity which a group of people who share the cultural traditions of a particular homeland or hearth. Race is identity with a group of people who are perceived to share a physiological trait, such as skin color. Nationality is identity with a group of people who share legal attachment to a particular country. HOWEVER…

These categories are not always clear nor accurate. For example, read about former President Barack Obama (pg. 230) Note – Mrs. Tatum’s says…Ethnicity is tied to ones cultural heritage but race is a human-made construct and as such has been used in negative classifying ways, SO when the US Census asks Mrs. Tatum for her race she says… HUMAN!

Ethnic Diversity in the United States is controversial because… To what extent does discrimination persist against minority ethnicities? Should preferences be given to minority ethnicities to correct past patterns of discrimination? To what extinct should the distinct cultural identity of ethnicities be encouraged or protected?

Ethnicities in the United States Based on census date, the most numerous U.S. ethnicities are Hispanic (17%), African American (12%) and Asian American (5%). However, there is difficulty in distinguishing ethnicity and race on the census and in the U.S. due to the categorizations used and people identifying themselves in more than 1 category. Take a look at the sample questions from the 2010 U.S. Census on pg. 233 – where do you fit? See why Mrs. Tatum says HUMAN!

Where are the ethnicities in the United States distributed? Study and read about the maps on pgs. 234-235 and discuss where and why the following ethnic groups are concentrated. Don’t forget to think about migration patterns and how cultures cluster together! Hispanics African Americans Asian Americans Native Americans

Ethnic Enclaves An ethnic enclave is a place with a high concentration of an ethnic group that is distinct from those in the surrounding area. Example, ethnic enclaves occur in large urban areas with distinct ethnic neighborhoods. New York City has many burrows. And inside of the burrows are many streets/blocks that are unique to concentrations of ethnicities such as China Town in NYC.

Ethnic Enclaves in the burrows of New York City

And issues with classifying ethnicity and race are not just complex in the U.S. Read about the complexity of citizen identification based on the census system in Brazil on pgs. 238-239.
