What was an Absolute Monarch? “A ruler whose power was not limited by having to consult with nobles, common people, or their representatives.” Given legitimacy through Divine Right – a concept that monarch received their throne from God and thus should not be challenged. Look at map on pg. 534

Who was Philip II? Devout Catholic – leader of the Counter Reformation Married to “Bloody” Mary of England but died before they could produce an heir Mary was Philips second wife, he went on the marry two more times, each wife died after childbirth He had 10 children and only 3 survived into adulthood
