HIV & AIDS GROUP 5 TAYLOR HOVERSON, Sophia Kubes, Jake La, Justin Jones, Angelica Lemus

WHAT IS HIV VS. AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Virus that attacks immune system Destroys type of white blood cell Found in semen, blood, vaginal and anal fluids and breast milk Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) NOT a virus Set of symptoms caused by the HIV virus Makes immune system not work ( too weak to fight infection) Last stage of HIV Untreated will lead to death

HISTORY of HIV/AIDS Identified (became known) in the 1980’s 1999 Researchers found virus identical to HIV in chimps (SIV) Exchanged between hunter and chimp

HISTORY of HIV/AIDS First known transmission of SIV to HIV in 1900’s Found in the Congo Congo has the most genetic diversity of strains HIV-2 came from sooty monkey less common, less infectious, only in a few countries

HISTORY: Migration of HIV/AIDS to AMERICA Stared in Kinshasa, Congo Traveled by railroads, roads, rivers, and sex trade Spread to Haiti when Haitians colonials moved back home from Congo Moved from Caribbean to New York and then California

HISTORY: Migration of HIV/AIDS to AMERICA Rare pneumonia and other diseases among gay men and heroin users raised attention 1987 first treatment for AIDS in US 1995 AIDS is leading cause of death in US

Symptoms of HIV I 2. Clinical Latency Stage People may not experience any symptoms People who are in treatment at during this period may last decades in this stage 3. Progressing to AIDS - At this point the immune system is weak because most CD4 cells and T-cells are destroyed ~ drops to 200 or lower for HIV positive individuals (healthy individuals have 500-1,500) ~ lead attack against infections People who are aren’t taking antiretroviral therapy experience symptoms such as: rapid weight loss, extreme fatigue, memory loss, neurological disorders, sores on mouth, anus and genitals, pneumonia I It estimated between 2-4 weeks of becoming infected, about 40- 90% individuals experience: Flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, rash, night sweats, muscles aches These symptoms can last weeks or days Some people may not show up HIV-positive at this early stage but people are still highly contagious

Living With It Stay healthy: It's important to stay healthy after being diagnosed. Taking medication helps slow the progression of it. ( Antiretroviral therapy) Do Tell : Communicating about your diagnosis is important with your partner. Being open and honest helps with keep the relationship strong. Get Support: Receiving a diagnosis can cause a lot of emotions and it's important to talk them out. It can be with healthcare providers, support groups, and families.

Insurance ( living with AIDS) When living with AIDS/HIV you have to have constant medical attention. That can be medication, hospital stays, or even check up. This can rack up your insurance charges excessively. Medicaid and Medicare can only cover so much. The affordable care act, that was adapted in 2014 helped reduce those cost. Unfortunately our current government is reducing this care, and could cause the cost of treating AIDS to skyrocket.

Famous Figures Magic Johnson Eazy- E Successful Businessman Living an influential life Eazy- E Successful Artist Died at age 32 from complications Charlie Sheen Actor Took place in irresponsible activities

Transmission Mother to child Certain Body Fluids: Blood, Semen,Pre-Seminal Fluid, Rectal Fluids, Vaginal fluids, Breast Milk Intercourse: Vaginal and Anal Needles: Drugs Mother to child Possibility of HIV positive mother passing HIV to child during birth Mother should take medication during pregnancy Cesarean Delivery (C-Section) can reduce chance

Advancements: Antiretroviral Therapy Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Works by combining with drugs Does not cure HIV Stops from reproducing and spreading Goal of treatment is to lower viral load Can still be spread even while on medication

Advancements: 5 Things to Know Easier than before One pill a day that has all the needed ingredients Lots of options Over 30 different types of ART drugs Medications work for a long time Drugs have less side effects Much safer and easier to tolerate You may start taking medication immediately The sooner the better

Advancements: Testing Kits Home Testing Kits Works on saliva swabs Results within 20 to 40 minutes Let’s people know their results within the privacy of their own home CD4 Count Pinprick Simple device that tests the strength of a person’s immune system

Advancements: Research Potential vaccine that could prevent HIV infection Produce disease fighting cells Could potentially eradicate latent HIV Cancer drug called JQ1 could be used Add JQ1 to infected cells and observe if there is a reactivation
