Introduction JAB is for learning and fun – it is also competitive! Mandatory meeting on Friday, June 30, 2017 at 4:00 PM The first round of the tournament will begin promptly after the review of rules. The final tournament round is planned on July 2, 2017 from 3:00 to 5:30 PM at the convention center.
Team Competition Format Each team can have 8 players – 1 captain and 7 alternates 5 players from each team will play the match The captain of a team can be changed in every match Alternates may be substituted at the start of each round and NOT in the middle of a round Each person will have an individual buzzer Semi-finals match-up will be decided by draw of lots. If any Pathshala has 2 teams in the semi-final in the same category (Junior / Senior), then those 2 teams will play against each other to ensure that the final is between 2 different Pathshala teams
General Guidelines Moderator’s decision will be final and binding No mouthing words or whispering of any kind from audience No recording of any type by any individuals without the express permission of the coaches of the teams being videotaped. However, JAINA and its agents reserve the right of photography and videography for the sole purpose of promoting JAINA and JAB, unless expressly prohibited by the coaches of the participating teams being video graphed and/or photographed Once match starts no one will be allowed to enter or leave
Round 1 – Individual Team Round Rules Non-competitive – no buzzers – no penalty Conferring allowed for team given the question (2nd team may only confer through writing) Answer must be given by Captain or person designated by Captain (during answer – conferring only via writing) 7 seconds to answer (different for Anagram question) 5 Second mark, moderator says “Answer Please” 2 seconds later, moderator calls “Time” 2nd team can steal (except Anagram question) Once the team member starts answering a question, no more than 5 second pause will be allowed during the answer
General Rules for Buzzer Rounds 2 and 3 and Tie-Break No conferring allowed at any time Conferring will be treated as a wrong answer Anyone can buzz at any time – if there have been no buzzes after 3 seconds have passed, moderator moves on If someone buzzes before the question is completed, moderator will stop reading and call on the contestant. 5 seconds to answer after buzzing 3 Second mark, moderator says “Answer Please” 2 seconds later, moderator calls “Time” Once the buzzing contestant starts answering a question, no more than 5 second pause will be allowed
Round 2 – Category Buzzer Round No Conferring – conferring will be treated as incorrect answer and penalized accordingly The individual who buzzed in has to answer when called upon by the moderator Categories will be announced prior to the questions Correct Answer +20 and Incorrect/No answer -20 If 2nd team steals – Correct Answer +10 and Incorrect/No answer -10
Round 3 – Grab Bag Buzzer Round No Conferring – conferring will be treated as incorrect answer and penalized accordingly The individual who buzzed in has to answer when called upon by the moderator Correct Answer +20 and Incorrect/No answer -10 If 2nd team steals – Correct Answer +10 and Incorrect/No answer -5
Winning Criteria and Tie Break First count will be number of matches won – next it will be points scored (not including an extra tie-break points) In preliminary rounds – if tie break is needed – 12 questions will be presented like a buzzer round. Correct Answer +20 and Incorrect/No answer -20 If 2nd team steals – Correct Answer +10 and Incorrect/No answer -10 If one set of 12 questions is not enough, additional similar rounds will be played.
Rules to Protest and Disputes Only Coach can protest – maximum 4 protests per match Protest immediately after the answer is given and before the next question is read Protest will be noted and resolved after the round is completed In case of a protest, the decision of the moderator will be final and binding The moderator may consult other individuals before declaring the final decision
Final Note Errors will of course be corrected as needed If there are any disputed questions they will be replaced DISCLAIMER: JAB Committee reserves the right to modify any of the tournament rules
