Presentation transcript:

1. How can a volcanic eruption change the surface of the earth? The hardened lava forms a cone-shaped landform. New rocks form from the lava once it cools down. Trees and other plants near the eruption will be destroyed.

2. How can an earthquake change the surface of the earth? More cracks form on the ground. Parts of the ground could separate. Buildings and homes are weakened because of the movement. Trees are destroyed.

3. What is the difference between “weathering” and “erosion”? Weathering is the breaking apart or changing of rocks and erosion is the movement or wearing down of rock, sand or soil.

4. The point on the earth´s surface that is above where the earthquake begins Epicenter

4a. The name of the plates under the surface of the earth tectonic plates

4b. The place where 2 tectonic plates meet Fault line

State if the example shows erosion or weathering. 5. Water that becomes ice and then thaws (becomes water), separating a rock. erosion weathering

6. The cleaning of a copper penny with salt and vinegar. erosion weathering

7. The movement of weathered material. erosion weathering

8. The roots of a plant breaking apart the sidewalk. erosion weathering

9. Waves hitting the sand on the beach. erosion weathering

10. The breaking apart or changing of rocks. erosion weathering

11. The soil on a hill being washed away by the rain. erosion weathering

12. Water eating away at the Alka Selzer tablets. erosion weathering

13. A deep v-shaped valley cut by a river through strong rock. Name the landform. 13. A deep v-shaped valley cut by a river through strong rock. canyon

14. The land next to the ocean. coast

15. A body of land surrounded by water on 3 sides. peninsula

16. A large natural stream of moving water river

17. A barren, dry area desert

18. A place in a river where water spills suddenly downward. waterfall

19. A body of salt water that covers almost ¾ of the earth´s surface. ocean

20. An area of land surrounded totally by water. island

21. A large moving body of ice. glacier

22. A plain that is higher than the land around it. plateau

23. A landform high above the land around it. mountain

24. An opening in Earth´s crust; pressure inside the earth forces hot molten rock upward volcano

25. A body of water surrounded by land lake

26. A large, mostly flat area, mainly of grass plain

27. A high place on Earth´s surface; not as high as a mountain hill

28. A low narrow area between hills or moutnains valley

29. An opening in the volcano Identify the part of the volcano described below. 29. An opening in the volcano magma vent ash

30. The enclosed space where magma collects below the surface of the earth magma chamber crater ash

31. A bowl-shaped area that forms at the top of the volcano lava crater ash

32. Burnt material that shoots out of the volcano and forms a cloud vent lava ash

33. Magma that flows onto the earth´s surface during a volcanic eruption lava ash

34. Melted rock under the surface of the earth magma lava ash
