GEOGRAPHY SBA NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 SCHOOL BASED ASSESSMENT NATIONAL MODERATION FEEDBACK VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 GENERAL POINTS Collective experience accumulated over a number of years shows through the high standard from most schools Learners are the true beneficiaries All work must be dated to show progression throughout the year VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 CLASS ASSESSMENTS Some schools are using tests in this section, while in others there was the wholesome copying of textbook exercises Teachers are expected to set tasks that are rich – see page 11 in the SAGs – and the list of the anticipated tasks is on pages 3 and 4 in the SAGs document VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 CLASS ASSESSMENTS (cont.) Teachers are required to submit only two tasks, which should allow sufficient opportunity and time to produce tasks that are rich and different from the exam/test type of activity The tasks must cover a range of aims, skills and knowledge VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 PROJECT The teacher’s guidance must be apparent right from guiding of the learners from correct topic selection and developing of a hypothesis or a focus question The projects must show evidence of support and monitoring by the educator Evidence of draft (work) is required and evidence of internal moderation VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 CONTROLLED TESTS Three controlled tests from two different sections, each of at least 50 minutes duration A good rule of thumb is 100 marks in 60 minutes for theory-type tests and 100 marks in 90 minutes for a practical-type tests VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 PRELIMINARY EXAMINATIONS Exam papers must be dated and accompanied by analysis grids and marking guides The correct sample of the analysis grid may be found in the SAGs document on page 35 – we only use 6 cognitive levels, not seven as was the case in the “old” grids VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 PRELIMINARY EXAMINATIONS (cont.) Scripts of learners must have evidence of marking and constructive feedback that helps guide learners on how they could have better tackled the exam questions Evidence of internal moderation in the actual learner scripts VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017

VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017 NATIONAL MODERATION 2016 THANK YOUs To the GREAT moderation team! * Loredana Borello * Kim Glover * Angela Phocas VUSI MASUKU January-February 2017
